New bubonic plague case confirmed in Michigan – 14th case this year. By: Mohan Garikiparithi | Health News | Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - 12:00 PM Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reports another Michigan native has contracted the bubonic plague, making this the 14th case of the year. Previous reports show that cases of the bubonic plague have also showed up in Colorado, where the resident had been visiting. The Colorado case took the life of an unidentified individual, making it the first case of the bubonic plague in the U.S. since 2004. In that case it was believed the individual contracted the bubonic plague from fleas on a dead animal. Thirteen other cases have emerged across the U.S., and it has resulted in four deaths so far.

Last year there were 10 cases of the bubonic plague, but those cases did not result in any deaths. It is still unclear as to why there is an influx of the bubonic plague. Dr. Although the bubonic plague can be passed by fleas, it is not possible to pass on the bubonic plague by human-to-human contact. Signs and symptoms of food poisoning, Food poisoning prevention. Maybe you’ve gone out to enjoy a meal with a loved one. You place your order and soon after your meal of choice arrives. It’s hot, fresh and highly flavorful, probably one of the best things you’ve ever tasted.

After your meal you head home and call it a night but a few hours into your sleep, your stomach lurches you awake. You dash out of bed barely making it to the bathroom stricken with vomiting and diarrhea. What happened?! Well, sadly your delicious meal could have been the culprit of your distress. What is food poisoning? Food poisoning is the result of eating contaminated food. Any type of food item, but meat especially, should be stored and prepared properly. Bacteria, for example, can get into food items either through contaminated water, not properly washing the food item, using dirty utensils, handling food with unwashed hands, or cross contamination which can happen by keeping raw chicken and vegetables together.

By: Dr. Victor Marchione | Saturday, June 6, 2015 Leafy greens are the mascot for good health. Salads, sautees or smoothies, we should all be eating them in all their varieties to stay healthy. Kale has been getting the most buzz because of its high nutritional content. It’s packed with vitamins such as C, A and B-6, it also contains iron and magnesium. But maybe you’re starting to get tired of kale – or don’t even enjoy the slightly bitter taste – either way, there are many other options in the leafy green family that you should try that provide even more nutrition than kale. So why stick to the same old green when there is a large variety on offer?

Clear mind, strong memory: Exercise makes your brain grow You’re doing your morning Sudoku every day, maybe an extra crossword puzzle on Saturdays and you have a new audio book to learn Spanish. Needless to say, you’re quite satisfied with yourself for giving your brain a good regular workout to keep the old noodle in good order.

Well, we applaud the efforts. Mental exercises and brain-training games and puzzles are part of protecting your memory and keeping cognition running strong. But increasing study has shown another crucial step to brain health is physical exercise. You need to get your heart rate pumping just a bit, equivalent to a fast-paced walk around the block a few times, to reap the beneficial effects of exercise on brain health. Scientists now say that exercise has broad benefits on cognition, particularly improvements in attention, working memory and the ability to multitask. How does exercise affect brain power? With aging, however, BDNF levels fall. Related Reading: Spot a Stroke Fast, Stroke Warning Signs and Prevention Tips. Look for these signs to spot a stroke By: Dr. Victor Marchione | Thursday, June 11, 2015 Stroke can be treated if detection and treatment happen quickly. But would you know if you or a loved one was having one? Research shows that close to 800,000 Americans have a stroke every year.

About 140,000 die from them. Of course, stroke prevention is the best approach to lower the statistics, but the problem will always exist. What is a stroke? A stroke happens when the blood to the brain is cut off or reduced. After a stroke, a person can be left with impaired judgement, impaired mobility, difficulty with perception, unusual emotions, significant speech impairment, memory loss and problems from neglecting the affected side of the body.

Whole Grains Benefits the Heart, Reduces Mortality. Protect your heart with this common food By: Dr. Victor Marchione | Monday, June 8, 2015 To live a long healthy life, food plays a main role. We know that fast-food and too much sugar are bad for us, and lean protein and vegetables are ideal. But there’s one food item that can actually reduce mortality – whole grains. Although bleached and white breads are not good for us, whole grains on the other hand offer us many nutritional benefits.

Whole grains contain all the essential nutrients from the grain and have undergone little to no processing. When foods go through processing and refining, many of the nutritional benefits become lost or devalued, so keeping the grain intact is essential for good health. Looking into whole grains and cardiovascular disease Harvard School of Public Health recently examined the health data of more than 2.7 million people: About 74,000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study and more than 43,000 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

But how we feel about things can be revealed by our stomach. There’s an intimate brain stomach connection – commonly referred to as the “mind gut connection” – that’s hard at work 24/7. As research now shows, those butterflies are like pin pricks of dread for the tummy, turning you into a physical and mental ball of nerves. The stomach is like a control center for mood and other brain functions. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Making the mind gut connection Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles revealed some of the first evidence that bacteria ingested in food can affect brain function in humans.

But as the temperatures begin to rise and the days get longer, you still have to be mindful of your health – especially seniors.
