Des plans libres de droit, voilà l'idée qui se cache derrière le projet WikiHouse : depuis 2011, cette communauté d'architectes défend l'idée d'une maison dont les dessins de construction seraient téléchargeables en toute liberté sur Internet. Une initiative qui s'inspire des principes de l'open source et du logiciel libre, qui permettent à chacun d'accéder, de modifier, et de partager gratuitement et comme bon lui semble le code source, dit alors « ouvert », d'un logiciel. Ici, cette philosophie s'applique à l'architecture, qui devient dès lors… accessible à tous.
