Snap Scene: The Church, Metro Theatre 8th September 2022 by Mandy Hall - Whats My Scene. Entering their fourth decade of making music and playing live shows with all the fierce creative energy of their early years, ARIA Hall of Fame inductees, The Church treated fans with two remarkable sets over 2 ½ hours with a taste of new songs from the band’s forthcoming 26th studio album, ‘The Hypnogogue’ – plus performing a string of hit songs across their expansive music career including ‘Under The Milky Way’, ‘Reptile’ and ‘Almost With You’. The 2022 epic five-piece line-up is bassist, vocalist and founder Steve Kilbey; with long-time collaborator TimEbandit Powles, drummer and producer across 17 albums since ’94; guitarist Ian Haug formerly of Australian rock icons Powderfinger, who joined the band in 2013 and Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero), touring multi-instrumentalist who is now a full-time member of The Church since the departure of Peter Koppes in early 2020.

REVIEW: THE CHURCH - NORTHCOTE THEATRE. Greg Phillips Sep 11, 2022 Blog REVIEW: THE CHURCH – NORTHCOTE THEATRE Saturday September 10,2022.Review: Greg Phillips. Photos: Jason Rosewarne The combination of Church main man Steve Kilbey’s fervent preference to play as much new and more recent material as possible and longtime fans’ need to hear the older hits, meant that the setlist for this Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Fortune Australian tour was always going to be a long one, much like the tour’s name!

After loosening up with No Ascension, Kilbey welcomed the crowd by announcing ‘Melbourne my spiritual home. I just couldn’t hack the weather’ and noted that the night was going to be ‘Bruce Springsteenian’ in it’s length. A relatively new gig venue, the ornate Northcote Theatre (originally a cinema) is known as being Northcote’s first electrified building, an apt moniker for tonight’s psychedelic rock fare. In their 4+ decade history, I don’t think The Church has ever sounded as good as this.

Encore: Grind You Took. The Church review: new congregation, new life for revered rockers. Review: The Church, Metro Theatre Sydney, September 8 The Church are a new congregation these days, but on tonight’s evidence, there is still plenty for lovers of literate, textured, melodic and powerful music to worship. Singer and main songwriter Steve Kilbey, who has been there from the start in Sydney in 1980, has lost two of his fellow founders within the last decade - guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes. But such is the status of The Church in Australia’s classic rock canon that Kilbey seems to have had his pick of replacements.

Tonight, no less a figure than Powderfinger’s Ian Haug easily matched Willson-Piper’s beefy gravitas at stage right, peeling off the riffs from majestic to mystic that the Kilbey songbook requires, and adding lyrical and crowd-pleasing layers of his own. With an epic two-and-a-half hour, 24-song setlist, there was something for everyone at this show - perhaps too much. StackPath. StackPath. [Interview] STEVE KILBEY. Ahead of their ‘The Slings and Arrows Of Outrageous Fortune’ Tour, The Church lead singer Steve Kilbey sits down with Sean Fraser to talk about Canberra in the late ’70s and working in the public service, to getting a standing ovation before playing a note and painting the new The Church album album cover using pastels. The podcast of this interview can be found HERE. [Sean Frazer] How are you been mate? What have you been up to today? [Steve Kilbey] Today, I went and jumped in the ocean. And then I did a little bit of body surfing, which surprised me how quickly that tired me out so that wasn’t a great feeling.

Yeah, absolutely. Did you like it? What I get out of this is a really inspiring story though, you hated your job, you thought, you know, maybe one day this music thing will work. I’m glad that Canberra didn’t have anything to offer so I could turn inward on myself. I think you’re 100% correct. Were the people around you saying the same thing? And you got stuck there. It’s good. STEVE KILBEY: THE CHURCH 2022 AUSTRALIAN TOUR INTERVIEW. Tim Powles of The Church talks touring in 2022 | RRL. “Rock ‘n roll was never designed to get old”, laughs Tim Powles – drummer, producer, and rhythmic backbone of Australian rock royals The Church, who are kicking off their latest Australian tour in September of this year.

“But it has got old; with the sheer passing of time and earth cycles, people find themselves in a position where they still love what they do, but they are ancient!” Tim is of course, reflecting on the reality of life in a band now in its 40s, preparing for the release of their 26th studio album as we approach the last quarter of 2022. “It’s going to take some time for people to hear it” says Powles. “We’re disappointed that we couldn’t get the record out this year, but the universe is in a fluctuating state; it’s speeding up and slowing down a lot lately – certain things were tangible and logistical things cannot be relied on, so what’s happening is the right thing for the band.”
