STACK‘s resident metalhead Simon Lukic delves into each title’s legacy and place in the Dio canon. Angry Machines (1996) Angry Machines is often looked at by fans as Ronnie James Dio’s weakest album. Much of this criticism lies in the record’s stylistic shift from traditional themes, and guitarist Tracy G’s modern approach. The remaster smooths out the harsh tones found on the original, making it more palatable for fans, while the bonus 12-track live recording from the 1997 Angry Machines Tour should be enough incentive to entice those still on the fence. ALBUM REVIEWS: Dio – Angry Machines, Magica, Killing the Dragon and Master of the Moon

It’s interesting coming back to these four albums after so many years with fresh ears. As fans will tell you those first four Dio albums were magical from ‘Holy Diver’ to ‘Dream Evil’ and the two that followed ‘Lock Up The Wolves’ and ‘Strange Highways’ get a few mixed reviews but this collection from 1996 – 2004 are really the overlooked era of the band what with Dio returning to Black Sabbath in 1992 with Vinny Appice for ‘Dehuminizer’ they make up the lat recordings of the band. These final four studio albums are in truth a mixed bag. If I’m honest I always saw ‘Strange Highways’ as an inferior yet musically similar take on the ground that both ‘Lock Up The Wolves’ and ‘Dehuminizer’ to a degree trod.

Dio - Killing The Dragon (BMG Reissue) When Dio’s ninth studio album, Killing The Dragon, emerged in 2002 it was rightly welcomed as something of a return to form; the first album to feature former Lion/Burning Rain six stringer Doug Aldrich and again featuring returned original bassist Jimmy Bain, it’s arrival on a metal scene largely ruled by numbskulls of the order of Linkin Park and Disturbed when largely unnoticed by the wallet-chained masses until the patronage of puissant Hollywood face Jack Black for the video for single Push led to a mini-renaissance in Dio-the-band’s fortunes.

Dio - Killing The Dragon (BMG Reissue)

It’s a shame that Black got the credit for this, since in reality the album actually was the strongest thing Ronnie James Dio had released for a long while – certainly since 1990’s Lock Up The Wolves. Better in the Dark reprised Dio and Bain’s tenure in Rainbow, rattling along on a superb riff and benefitting from a superb delivery from our diminutive hero.
