Deep Purple's Don Airey: "Whoosh! is the best album I've done with the band"... It’s not often you get the chance to talk to a bona fide heavy rock legend – certainly not one who has been a part of your regular musical diet for over forty years.

Deep Purple's Don Airey: "Whoosh! is the best album I've done with the band"...

So when the chance came up to chat with Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey about the band’s new and very wonderful album Whoosh! (earMusic), to say I was keen would be the understatement of the year. Deep Purple - Whoosh! (EarMusic) The funky hard rock of Drop The Weapon (which with it’s little Dancing In The Streets quote from keyboarder Don Airey hints at the playfulness of something like Mary Long from 1973’s Who Do We Think We Are) aside, you don’t get much of the ‘classic’ Deep Purple sound anymore.

Deep Purple - Whoosh! (EarMusic)

This, of course, shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise should you know anything about the band; singer Ian Gillan is now seventy four years old, and long past any suggestions that he should try and regain the glories of yore… What is surprising is just how well Purple have repurposed their sound to face the challenges of septuagenerian rock n’roll; Whoosh! , their twenty-first full-length studio album and first since 2017’s Infinite, finds the band in musical repose, broadening their sound to take in, well, anything they feel like doing really. After being with legendary rock group Deep Purple since 1969 you could forgive Roger Glover for being a little ho-hum about the release of a new album – after all Whoosh!

DEEP PURPLE Interview

Will be his twenty-first album with the Hall Of Fame listed band. Instead when I get the opportunity to talk to him about the album I find out he is just as excited as he would be if this was the band’s first album. “There is that magical moment between finishing an album and releasing it,” he says as we talk about how he is feeling at the time. “Of course this has been a slightly longer one because of the virus, but during that time it is still ours.

Then when it is released it is not ours anymore, it is out there in the world on its own – coping the best it can. Deep Purple: Woosh! Deep Purple is one of those rare bands that have been going for well into several decades and continue to record new music that is not just good but in some cases, on par with earlier classic material.

Deep Purple: Woosh!

The various versions of the band and the tumultuous personality clashes of key members has long been a thing of the past. The line up these days has been intact and functioning beautifully on the international live circuit for at least a good couple of decades. Whilst veteran rock guitar virtuoso Steve Morse may always be the ‘new guy’ for the guitar slot, his contribution to the band, post Ritchie Blackmore, are nothing short of essential. Similarly, keyboard wizard, Don Airey, is one of the few living musicians that can reinvigorate the virtually incommensurate musical legacy that the late, great Jon Lord established with the band’s timeless tunes that continue to inspire new generations.
