The Dandy Warhols, Magic Machine @ The Gov, Adelaide 26/4/2024 - Hi Fi Way. Thank god for The Dandy Warhols! This was one for the ages. The Dandy Warhols return to Adelaide to play the first of two sold out shows at the home of live music at The Gov. One word, incredible! Armed with brand new album (their twelfth) Rockmaker and plenty of classics from the back catalogue we experienced The Dandies at the height of their powers and at their very best. Opening proceedings was Sydney pysch rockers Magic Machine. It was a really great atmosphere in The Gov being a Friday night and there was definitely a sense of anticipation for what was about to unfold. Kicking it up a gear with We Used To Be Friends and big singles from the new album Summer Of Hate and Danzig With Myself. Their set was loaded with gold with Plan A, Be Alright and I Will Never Stop Loving You with Courtney adding that Deborah Harry (Blondie) sung Zia’s parts on the album with Zia replying with “she did a good job”.
Live Review By Rob Lyon Like this: Like Loading... LIVE: Dandy Warhols – The Rockmaker tour - 25 April 2024 – The Tivoli, Brisbane – words and pictures by Bec Harbour When the Dandy Warhols announced that they’d be touring for their latest album Rockmaker, I was very keen to see them again, their last visit only being in 2022 supporting the Hoodoo Gurus, it’s probably about 7th or 8th time I’ve seen them and I never get sick of them. The support act Magic Band were a nice little surf-psych intro for the evening, kicking off with ‘Pieces of My Brain’ and finishing up with ‘Horror Movie’ – it looked like it was going to be night of bands with minimal movement tonight. Magic Machine – Tivoli – photos by Bec Harbour With a reasonably long gap between sets, there were a few false starts where the crowd got excited that the Dandy Warhols were going to start early (in the multiple times that I have seen them, they have never been on time).
They kicked off with ‘Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth’ and the crowd hooted and woo-hooed. Dandy Warhols – Tivoli – photos by Bec Harbour. Welcome back to another Triple M's gig review! This time, we're diving into the mesmerizing world of the Dandy Warhols, who lit up the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on a rainy 1st of May, 2024.
Despite the weather, Sydney’s rock enthusiasts turned out in droves for a sold-out show that marked a milestone—30 years of the Dandy Warhols weaving their musical magic. In this episode, Row takes you through a night of psychedelic rock and aural pleasures, starting with the band's iconic opener "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," setting the tone with its energetic rhythms and entrancing visuals. The Dandy Warhols, known for their cool, psych-rock essence, didn’t just play music; they created an immersive experience that felt like stepping into a dream. The highlight of the night was the new track "I'd Like To Help You With Your Problem," featuring the legendary Slash on guitar. Welcome back to another Triple M's gig review! A testament to the weird and wonderful band who never compromised its sound, and whose experimentation and knack for a hook thrust the foursome into the mainstream.
With a second sold-out gig at The Gov on Thursday night in support of 12th studio album Rockmaker, the evening had all the hallmarks of a classic rock show of a sort few and far between these days. Dimly lit with the dank smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke wafting through the venue, it was the perfect stage for the band to share its often simple, mostly psychedelic and always infectious rock sound.
No fancy lights, no screens; just drums, guitars, vocals, keys and a legion of loyal fans. Opening with “Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth”, it was clear the band weren’t going to shy away from its extensive catalogue that is peppered with hits. “We Used to Be Friends” wasn’t far behind, but it wasn’t without its issues. Keyboardist Zia McCabe, on the other hand, was quite the opposite. Support local arts journalism. Log into Facebook. Scenestr - Review: The Dandy Warhols @ The Gov (Adelaide) Thirty years is a long time to maintain momentum for a band, but The Dandy Warhols have aged gracefully since their early heyday and commercial peak in the mid to late '90s and early 2000s. That interest hasn't waned either as evidenced by this latest, sold-out Australian tour including Adelaide's The Gov (26 April).
Support band Magic Machine, from Sydney, are grateful to be on the same bill and play a set clearly in the genre of surfadelic. Alongside the immediate reference point of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the Sunnyboys also come to mind during their more melancholic, reflective songs such as the intro 'Day Dreamer'. 'Bad Boogie' has a pulsing, primitive bass and seems unending. They complete their set with 'Strange Magic', a frenetic wall of sound with falsetto vocals that includes a brief 'Popcorn' keyboard cameo within the intensive driving performance.
To the haunting drones of 'Godless' the audience respond with a cheer of recognition, Zia giving an affirming nod. The Dandy Warhols… will forever be associated with recent visitor Brian Jonestown Massacre due to the opus documentary DIG!. Their style of eclectic alternative punk rock is still aweing and daunting audiences 30 years on, a history of hits and misses has dogged them, but with a late 90s/early 2000s cache of songs like: Bohemian Like You, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Every Day Should Be a Holiday, We Used to Be Friends, and Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, a The Dandy Warhols performance was a spectacle that Simon Coffey was not going to miss.
Sometimes being a The Dandy Warhols fan is as The Ohio Players sang, a Love Rollercoaster affair. Magic Machine Sydney based, an unknown quantity, even though they have been around since 2021, their bandcamp page describes them as ‘Garage Dream Boogie’. Part of the Australian musical tradition of psych-rock music, obsessed with the 60s it seems, especially the organ sound so reminiscent of The Door and early Pink Floyd.
