Since there are still no live shows to the current album “Fistful Of Fire”, BONFIRE decided to take it to heart: In summer 2020 they went to the “Flatliners Recording Studios” again to work on the album “Roots” to help the fans through hard times with new material. The band originally started out way back in 1972 under the name of Cacumen. After seven years together and two albums the band signed with BMG Records who suggested that their name was hard to pronounce and not marketable. After a short brain-storming session the band decided to re-name themselves Bonfire. Now flash forward to 2020 and the band are about to release their nineteenth studio album, an album that has a freshness about it as it they once again manages that true Bonfire catchy swagger. Recently I had a chance to chat to original member Hans Ziller who despite being in lockdown was in good spirits about Fistful Of Fire being released to their fans.
“One of the things that we wanted to do this time was write, record and mix the album all in a complete process,” he says as we discuss the album and the goals the band set out to achieve with it. Opening instrumental track ‘The Joker’ has Spanish guitar, pipes and a South American flavour that stretches to just over a minute and a half before bursting into real opener ‘Gotta Get Away’ a song which doesn’t seem to take anything from that opening theme.
That said it’s a great melodic rocker with, cool guitars and a late eighties Rainbow vibe that is really cool. And you know what the ore you spin it the more you will love the real ‘vintage Bonfire’ feel. So far so good, let’s dive in further! The upbeat ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ isn’t a half bad follow up either – a nice noisy rocker will a killer chorus and nice thrust; whilst ‘Ride the Blade’ is grittier and sports some of the best guitar on the album.
