Album review: Circle’s end – Alarum – The Metal Wanderlust. In the modern age of Metal, everyone loves a good mind-blowing. It’s certainly more difficult nowadays with all the masses of talented bands coming from every nook-and-cranny, but it’s even more impressive when it comes from a band who’s been around for 20-odd years. Enter the Australian Progressive gods, Alarum. They’re back with their fourth album and their first in 9 years – succeeding 2011’s “Natural Causes”). Entitled “Circle’s End”, the album was released on June 19th via the Dinner For Wolves label. Ladies and gentlemen, adjust your guitar strap height to eleven because we’re about to get jazzy! The first contender in the ring is the first single, “Sphere of Influence”.
No track transition feels spliced together from nothing either, heck not even any riff feels disjointed in any way – showcasing a band who spent 9-year years mastering their new craft of Progressive music (not just Metal, MUSIC). ALARUM have released three full length albums – “Fluid Motion” (1998), “Eventuality” (2004), and “Natural Causes” (2011).
ALARUM have toured extensively in Australia and also ventured to the USA and Europe. Now, nine years later, they are back with their fourth, titled “Circle’s End,” which contains ten tracks. “Sphere of Influence” leads off the album. Fierce guitar riffs and beefy vocals open the song, then there is a moment of ambiance. “Delta” is a short burner, where the Progressive elements come through. “War of Nerves” sounds exactly like the title. “Thoughts to Measure” opens with dancing bass guitar notes, and some backing lead guitar. “Sojourn” is an over eight-minute closing song. Why is all of the savagely good Progressive Metal coming from Australia these days? Songwriting: 9Musicianship: 10Memorability: 8Production: 9. THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From LAMB OF GOD, PROTEST THE HERO, and More Out Today - 6/19. Alarum – Circle's End (Dinner For Wolves) | Dead Rhetoric. Thursday, 18th June 2020 By Matt Coe Rating: 9/10 Gaining acclaim from domestic Australian acts as well as international musicians like Atheist’s Kelly Shaefer who contributed vocals to a cover of “Piece of Time” back in 2006, Alarum have been around since 1992, releasing three full-lengths and numerous demos.
Relatively silent on the recording front since their Willowtip Records release Natural Causes of 2011, these progressive/fusion lads intertwine a mix of thrash, rock, and jazz influences for the fourth album Circle’s End – enveloping your brain matter with ten tracks of intricacies and left-field musical combinations. And yet they figure out a way to create song structures that contain tighter hooks and memorable moments against the obvious skilled interplay and adventurous musicianship carried throughout these tracks. Stair step charging riffs and outer universe soundscapes make for some intriguing, alluring combinations. Alarum official website. Alarum - Lyric Video For The New Single Launched. Themusic.com. Alarum - Circle's End - Heavy Blog Is Heavy. The thing about Australia is, it’s very big. Really, its very hard to imagine how big that place is and it’s not helped by the fact that most of it is endless desert.
More pertinent to our discussion today is how this size translates into just the sheer number of scenes, bands, and venues that operate out of there. It’s hard to keep track and we here at Heavy Blog have been trying to do our best to cover what has been one of the most prolific scenes in the last decade (which is a bit unfair to be honest, seeing as “the scene” is a whole damn continent). But even so, because of how massive Australia is, we’ll never catch all of them and many bands considered to be influential over there will be virtually unknown to us. Alarum is a good example. When I received Circle’s End, I had no idea what I was clicking on. Second track “Syzygy” is a pretty good example of the progressive thrash side of things.
Alarum’s Circle’s End releases on June 19th. Alarum – Circles End (2020) Circle’s End is the newest album by Alarum. This Australian Thrash band utilises other genres in their blend, from Latin to Fusion, making them quite an interesting act. Having been around for over 20 years, it is very surprising to have only just heard about them. Even more surprising is hearing this new album. SPHERE OF INFLUENCE, starts off with an intimidating riff, then the whole back kicks in to near death metal proportions, then break into a Jazz coda, then as quick as that twist, they get all POWER METAL/Progressive, and it’s back to that sweet Thrash.
It’s a fine opener, with little snippets of other elements of their unique choices of other music to mix in with the core. SYZYGY, erupts with a dynamic rhythm, with tiny little quirks along the way. DELTA, well, the intro again is in your face, then we get a beautiful melodic lead, the drumming to this point has been stellar, the bass is expressive and we have a clean cut melodic number at hand. -Scary Like this: Like Loading... Circle’s End is the apogee of Alarum’s creativity, a sweeping ten-track song cycle that continues the band’s signature style of chaotic technicality.
The playing is ablaze with swirling, crossfire guitar histrionics bursting forth from off-kilter metal riffing and choppy time-signature changes.
