The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG)

Less than a year ago I was approached by Charles Stahler, Co-Director of The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG), with several intriguing projects to promote vegetarianism among Latin Americans in the USA and in all Latin countries in the Americas. One of the initiatives, funded jointly by the International Vegetarian Union and the VRG, involved starting a guide of vegetarian resources for Latin America. Since then, we have mailed information request forms similar to the ones on this web site to over 500 restaurants, stores, and individuals in most countries in Latin America. Of those contacted about 12% have returned the completed forms and are included in this first edition of the guide. Additionally, I had the great fortune of visiting Colombia and Mexico in the past 10 months and that provided an added opportunity to meet with owners of vegetarian businesses in those countries and to add them to the guide.

I was afraid I would not be able to find miso, nori, udon, or umeboshi (if you are not familiar with these items, see the following glossary), but soon I noticed that Americans seem to be much more interested in Japanese foods than I thought. For example, when I was writing my first article for "Vegetarian Journal" and needed to research whether people can buy daikon, a typical Japanese vegetable, I easily found it at an Oriental store and even in regular supermarkets in Baltimore.
