By The Backlot | Photo credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Andrew Fleming is no stranger to controversy. An openly gay writer and director who splashed onto the scene with the uncommonly frank and unapologetically gay college dramedy Threesome in 1994, Fleming has defied convention (spunky tween comedy Nancy Drew and trippy gorefest Bad Dreams came from the same guy?)

, poked good-natured fun at our sacred cows (with the masterful political comedy Dick), and launched a subgenre of chick horror (The Craft), while keeping a decidedly queer viewpoint the whole way. This week Hamlet 2, Fleming’s hilarious and wonderfully vulgar satire of theatre, inspirational teachers and the artistic void that is Tucson, Arizona, opens across the country. AfterElton.com: First off, what’s your beef with Tucson? AE: You didn’t grow up there yourself, but you had a personal experience there?

AE: You sort of play up some of those things in the movie. AE: Did you have a similar experience in high school? Hocus Pocus (1993. Kenny Ortega. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is a 1988 comedy horror film directed by James Signorelli. Cassandra Peterson plays the role of horror hostess Elvira in her feature film debut. The screenplay was written by Peterson, John Paragon and Sam Egan.[2] Plot[edit] Elvira tries to console herself and impress Bob by cooking dinner using one of Morgana's recipes and, despite the oddity of the ingredients, she succeeds, only to have herself and Bob attacked by a creature created from the mixture.

While she is in jail Bob goes to the mansion to recover the spellbook. The next morning, Elvira, whose house was unsalvageable, and all of her aunt's possessions and magical objects destroyed, is ready to leave town. Cast[edit] Reception[edit] The film received a Razzie Award nomination for Cassandra Peterson as Worst Actress in 1989, losing to Liza Minnelli for both Arthur 2: On the Rocks and Rent-A-Cop. Soundtrack[edit] The original music score was composed by James B.

Awards and Nominations[edit] Fantasporto. John Paragon. John Dixon Paragon (born 9 December 1954) is an American actor, writer, and director. He was born in Anchorage, Alaska, on an Army base. He grew up and attended schools in Fort Collins, Colorado. Paragon is probably best known for his work on children's show Pee-wee's Playhouse where he played Jambi the Genie and voiced Pterri the Pterodactyl.

In addition to writing many of the regular season episodes of Playhouse, Paragon also co-wrote (with Paul Reubens) the acclaimed Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special in 1988, for which they were nominated an Emmy Award for Best Writing in a Children's Special. Paragon got his start in the Los Angeles-based improvisation group The Groundlings alongside Reubens and Phil Hartman. He also collaborated with fellow Groundling Cassandra Peterson on numerous Elvira projects, including the recurring role of The Breather, an annoying caller, for her first television series on KHJ-TV-Los Angeles.

The Little Mermaid (1989 film) The 28th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989 to largely positive reviews, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release,[3] and $211 million in total lifetime gross worldwide.[2] After the success of the studio's 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after a string of critical or commercial failures produced by Disney that dated back to the early 1970s.

It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. Plot One night, Ariel, Flounder and an unwilling Sebastian travel to the ocean surface to watch Prince Eric celebrate his birthday. Ariel soon becomes enamored with Eric. A violent storm wrecks the ship and tosses Eric overboard, but Ariel saves him and brings him to shore. The next day, Ariel finds out that Eric will be married to the disguised Ursula. Cast Music. Best known works[edit] Queervision: The Little Mermaid (Disney) | Ars Marginal. Nothing is sacred here at Ars Marginal.

Not even your childhood. This Queervision post takes on the modern world’s great mythmaker. That’s right, we’re queering Walt Disney movies. Not Disney movies with flesh-and-blood actors. Like many people in my generation, I grew up on Disney movies. Disney, that bastion of feminist liberation (that’s sarcasm, by the way), thought they were teaching kids Good Morals and Valuable Life Lessons when they made these fractured fairy tales stripped of sex and blood and death. For example: The Little Mermaid. Put them in human bodies, and they’re walking stereotypes of gay men. Don’t get me started on Scuttle. If you watch how they act around each other, they sure do have a sort of Odd Couple thing going on, don’t they? So here’s my queer take on their relationship. Sebastian and Scuttle are a gay couple trying to work out the intricacies of a long-distance relationship. Can they make this work? Like this: Like Loading...

Gayscape #11: Disney is the Most Gay Friendly Congolmerate Out There. Being gay, and a geek, growing up, it was difficult to find other gay people who were passionate about the same things I was – namely sci-fi ,fantasy, horror and comic books. Nowadays, it’s much easier to find gay people with similar interests, but back in the day? It seemed no other gay people loved the same things I did. Except the one thing almost all gay people will geek out over: Disney. On the one hand, it might seem kind of shocking to some; after all, The Walt Disney Company is THE most All-American brand in the world.

I mean, there’s Norman Rockwell, and then there’s Disney. In The Beginning Ok, as far as I can tell, Walt Disney himself wasn’t actually gay. The Curious Case of Tommy Kirk There is only one known case of an openly gay person being involved in one of Disney Studio’s projects during Walt’s time, and let’s just say say that it didn’t go so smoothly.
