Vancouver’s Bike-Sharing Conundrum (And Three Simple Solutions) | HUSH Magazine. Photographed by | Dmitry Gudkov One year ago (to the day), the streets of Vancouver were flooded with BIXI bikes for the Velo-City Global Conference. Over a thousand of these sturdy, utilitarian, three-speed bicycles were shipped in for delegates, instantly transforming the city’s streets into a pedal-powered heaven. They were the talk of the town on both traditional and social media, with sightings being reported from Commercial Drive to Stanley Park, and the backdrop of our burgeoning bicycle infrastructure on display for the entire world to see.

And then, as the conference came to a close, the bikes were unceremoniously loaded onto a truck and shipped back to Montréal, leaving Vancouverites with nothing but fond memories and vague promises of a formal program launching within the year. As you can probably guess, this elusive Vancouver scheme still hasn’t materialized, almost six years after the city began to study the concept. Words by | Chris Bruntlett. Vancouver bike sharing by the numbers: An infographic. Courtesy of the Mayor's Office, here's an infographic displaying some of the Vancouver bike share details in pictorial form.

Bike sharing in Vancouver: Here's how it's gonna work If you're looking for a "What about the helmet law? " item, you'll find it part-way down. The infographic then says nothing one way or the other if City Hall is lobbying Victoria for an exception; only touting the as-yet-to-be-developed helmet dispenser machines. Also, the graphic suggests that taxpayers are not on the hook if the Alta-Bixi public bike share (PBS) program in Vancouver fails. Bike share statistics: 2012– See Page 9 (pdf) The infographic touts a massive uptick in bicycle trips among women, nearly double the overall trend since 2008. The centrepiece of the infographic is a cost comparison between maintaining the PBS program, installing new parking meters, and rebuilding sidewalks.
