Much of his work consists of mind-bending scenes where dreamscapes are flipped into unusual angles or folded into each other. For many, Pratama’s compositions look like scenes that came out of the science fiction thriller ‘Inception’. All images © Jati Putra Pratama. StumbleUpon. Light in the Darkness: Benn's Psalms This weekend I found a mysterious French publication called simply Benn (Editions Medialogue, 1987, ISBN 2867400104). It contains 150 paintings illustrating verses from Psalms, with no details or dates, and only a brief preface (by "The Editor") containing glowing quotes by Jules Romains and the Louvre's Maurice Serullaz. Research of course cleared up part of the mystery: These are the work of Benejou Rabinowicz (1905–89), better known as Benn. Most of the works date to around 1959. The longest blurb in English I can find is by bookseller Eric Kline (who is selling a 1960 portfolio of Benn's Psalms): Benn was a Jewish-Polish painter and graphic artist. Some links in French: 1, 2. Psalm 112:4 Unto the upright there ariseth: light in the darkness. Psalm 69:2,3 Save me, O God, for the waters are come even to threaten my life, I am sunk in the mire of the deep, where there is no standing, I am come into the depth of the waters, and the flood overfloweth me.

The Twelve. Illustrations by Yury Annenkov for the first edition of Alexander Blok's poem "The Twelve" (1918). One of my favorite spots on the internet, the Russian illustration blog da-zdra-per-m, featured the book in April 2010. Clicking the images will bring you to that post. [update: RIP da-zdra-per-m -- I miss you so much!] The blog Snegourotchka discussed the poem and these illustrations in a 2008 post (in English).

I remember when I first came upon them (I can't read Russian) I mistook them for work by George Grosz, one of my favorite artists. Previously: A Gentle Creature. Viktor Pivovarov 1. From wikipedia: "Viktor Pivovarov, along with Ilya Kabakov and Erik Bulatov, was one of the leading artists of the Moscow Conceptualist artistic movement of the 1960s and 1970s... Pivovarov was also a prolific illustrator of children's books, with over 50 books to his credit. Viktor Pivovarov, 1975, No, You Don't Remember (cropped; from Do You Remember Me?) The Art of Krowd Keeping by Gazzo Book. The sound of stenciling. Into the surreal. Into the surreal Posted by Morrison Conway on November 10, 2011 · 22 Comments Moscow-based artist Philipp Igumnov has created these fun illustrations and collages. His artistic style walks a fine line between a melancholy dream world and ridiculous humour with each photograph containing a retro element that works to defamiliarize our notions of the past.
