The ride was interesting because I saw the Vietnamese countryside. Not even two miles outside of Hanoi (population 9 million or so) you have farming communities growing rice. As far as the eye can see, rice fields and folks in conical hats working them. Seems every spare plot of land has got rice growing in it. If the bus weren't moving so fast down the highway, I would get some great shots of farmers working the fields. Our tour guide gave us some information about the bay as we bounced down the highway. . There was one sight on the highway that got the entire bus excited. Made it to Ha Long about 12:30, jumped on a boat and was having lunch by 1pm. I'm most excited about Ha Long Bay . Next, we stopped at Titop island. Tried to catch the sunrise but my alarm didn't go off. . The hotel was great for the most part but I did get a sketchy feeling when I first checked in.

It had been difficult choosing one as lots of the reviews we'd read hadn't actually mentioned the cruise companies names and some of them had gotten really, really bad reviews. First impressions of Galaxy Cruises were good though - they arrived promptly at our hotel in a good condition, A/C minivan and our tour guide seemed really nice. The journey from Hanoi to Ha Long City was smooth and our tour guides were really informative about the area and the history of the bay. I recalled liking very much my earlier boat cruise day visit, and decided to spend an overnight on a boat this time. My, how things have changed! The bay remains incredibly scenic, but it is now jammed with boats and tourists. The tour guide of my boat told me that over 100 overnight boats cruise the bay, along with over 300 day trip ships. At any given moment, 500 boats are crammed about with tourists.

Still, this was very much a worthwhile trip. I was fortunate as the weather largely cleared up during my short stay on the bay. My trip began with an 8:30 am pick up from my Hanoi hotel. The road between Hanoi and Halong Bay was a big improvement from the past, and the highway system apparently is being improved further to shorten the trip by another hour. My ship was quite fine. There were three main activities.
