Ear Training, Part 2

As I mentioned last time, a valuable method of training your ear is to practice singing the notes that you play on the guitar. I’d like to elaborate on this fun approach and offer you some specific advice on how to go about doing this on your own. A good way to start this training method is to stay within one scale and key and make sure that you can follow with your voice any melodies or licks that you play. Obviously, you can only sing one note at a time, so you’ll probably want to stick with playing single notes, at least for now, so you can zero in on specific pitches. Let’s say you’re using the A-minor pentatonic scale, illustrated in FIGURE 1A, as your starting point.

An essential element in ear training is the thorough understanding of intervals. Berklee Online Releases BitTorrent Bundle Of Music Lesson Videos And Ebooks. Berklee Online Releases BitTorrent Bundle Of Music Lesson Videos And Ebooks

Given a still controversial BitTorrent brand, Berklee Online's choice to take advantage of BitTorrent tech may surprise some but seems in keeping with the online division's embrace of current options to share educational materials while marketing their online classes. The Berklee Online Musician’s Guide was released yesterday as a BitTorrent Bundle . Such bundles have previously contained multimedia content by musicians and other artists and this seems to be the first example of such related content being distributed as a BitTorrent Bundle by an educational institution or other business.

Guitar Strength: The Ins and Outs of Supersonic Alternate Picking

More often than not, the first thing I notice about their playing is that they employ an unpolished technique that lacks the discipline of a steady, consistent and controlled use of strict alternate picking. What I find with these students, especially those who were previously self-taught, is that their technique is a haphazard (yet sometimes logical) combination of alternate, economy and awkward sweep picking. Saddle Up Your Telecaster® - By Jerry Donahue - Seymour Duncan Tech Tips. We asked "Bendmaster of the Telecaster" Jerry Donahue to share some of his secrets for setting up a Telecaster® bridge and keeping it properly intonated (Jerry demonstrates this technique in his clinics).

Saddle Up Your Telecaster® - By Jerry Donahue - Seymour Duncan Tech Tips

Attention all current and would-be Tele® slingers! You needn't resort to six individual bridge saddles to improve your intonation. The original Broadcaster design called for three brass saddles: and that's still the best design today. The larger saddles mean more mass, providing greater output, sustain and tone. Also, with two strings per saddle, you have twice the string pressure against the body! Now, on to intonation: Until fairly recently, I felt that a guitar couldn't really play in tune unless each string's 12th fret harmonic and 12th fret note had the exact same reading on the electric tuner.

Here's another for instance: An "A" chord barred at the fifth fret sounds fine. Remember, life is about compromise. John Petrucci: Practice Tips, Part 1. We revisit John Petrucci's classic Guitar World column, "Wild Stringdom. " Of all the things that can frustrate a guitarist the most, it's the nagging feeling that he's not reaching a certain level of proficiency as quickly as he should. If you are one of those players who plays for hours on end yet doesn't see the desired results, then this lesson's for you. It's all about the most overlooked aspect of guitar playing: practicing. Before you start a practicing regimen, you have to be aware that the study of music is a lifelong process-it's a discipline. And the key to mastering any discipline is consistency. Getting the most out of your practicing regimen depends on not only the quantity, but the quality of time you put in.

Without reservation, I feel that time management is one of the major keys to developing a successful practice schedule. I learned how to make the most of my practice time early on. Facebook. FRETS.COM. An everyday, but important job!

Of course, I can't go into all the details of fitting a new nut because there are so many possible difficulties that can crop up, especially with older instruments. As a repairman, my goal is to be anonymous, so I rarely change the style from that of the original manufacture. This old 000-28 has been refretted a few times, and the nut has been recut, shimmed, and recut again.
