The Boys Who Only Develop A Penis When They Hit The Age Of 12. When born, to all intents and purposes they appear to be female. But when the children referred to as “Guevedoces” in an isolated village in the Dominican Republic reach puberty, things start to change. They develop muscles, their chests start to grow, and by the age of 12, they sprout testes and a penis. This extraordinary intersex condition, known medically as “5-alpha-reductase deficiency,” has been documented for a new BBC2 series “Countdown to Life,” which takes a look at how we develop in the womb and how early changes impact us for the rest of our lives.

In the program, they meet one of these Guevedoces, which literally translates as “penis at 12,” called Johnny. Talking to presenter and journalist Dr Michael Mosley, Johnny describes his childhood and being brought up as a girl called Felecitia by his parents. But Johnny is not alone. The condition was first brought to light in the 1970s by Dr Julianne Imperato, who was working at Cornell University as an endocrinologist. Getting Pregnant 10 Commandments Hilarious Funny. British Scientists Could Be Genetically Editing Human Embryos Within Months. The genetic modification of human embryos remains a controversial issue, but a British scientist is hoping to become the first in the U.K. to gain approval to perform the process. It could be used to reduce miscarriages and increase the success rate of IVF. Dr.

Kathy Niakan, from the Francis Crick Institute, is currently awaiting a decision from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to find out if she is able to go ahead with the technique, first proposed last year. The decision is expected next week and, if approved, gene editing is expected to begin by the summer. "We would really like to understand the genes needed for a human embryo to develop successfully into a healthy baby,” Dr. The experiment will focus on the first seven days of embryonic development, when the single cell that is the fertilized egg turns into a structure made of 200 to 300 cells called a blastocyst. Naturally, you saunter on down to the pharmacy, pick up a quick urine test and voilà: you’ll soon know whether you have indeed got a human developing inside you. However, the pregnancy tests you’re thinking of right now are relatively new inventions.

So how on Earth did women originally test to see if they were expecting? As it turns out, older “pregnancy tests” were far more bizarre and surreal than you’re probably imagining. It’s All About Number One Image credit: antoniodiaz/Shutterstock So, first off, a little context. A contemporary pregnancy test looks for signs of elevated hCG in the woman’s urine any time from six days after fertilization occurs. Urine Prophets Image credit: Wine was once mixed with urine in order to detect pregnancy. easy camera/Shutterstock There was a time when the urine of suspected pregnant women was analyzed not by medical doctors or high-tech pregnancy tests, but by “prophets.” Pee Like An Egyptian Wind Tunnel In Plain View. This Fungus Can Instantly Induce An Earth-Shattering Orgasm. Officially discovered back in 2001, John Halliday and Noah Soule were the first to record the effects of a fungus that could instantly induce female orgasm.

Published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, Halliday explains that he and his colleague Soule heard of an unusual fungi growing in recent lava flows on the island of Hawaii – a bright orange mushroom which supposedly caused women to suddenly reach climax for no apparent reason. Intrigued by the concept, the pair headed to the island to see if these fantastical claims are true. For science, of course. Forming on lava flows 600–1000 years old, the unnamed Dictyophora species was deemed a very intense aphrodisiac when smelled by women – despite, or maybe because, of its “fetid” smell.

The pair put the claim to the test by asking volunteers (I wonder how they whittled the number of applicants down?) To take a deep whiff, and recording their arousal levels. First Lab-Grown Human Sperm Technique Revealed By Scientists. In what has been heralded as a breakthrough for infertility treatment, scientists have apparently created human sperm in a lab for the first time. If confirmed, the research could one day allow infertile men to have their own biological children. Startup biotechnology company Kallistem in Lyon, France, revealed the breakthrough earlier this year, but now have taken out a patent describing the technique, in tandem with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

It involves using tissue that produces sperm in testicles, known as seminiferous tubules, and “coaxing” it to produce mature sperm cells in a 72-day process, according to New Scientist. In this case, the tissue specimens were collected from infertile men, showing that such tissue could be made to produce sperm cells. The research is yet to be peer-reviewed, but was presented at a press conference in Lyon late last week. Read this next: Asthmatic Sea Otter Learns To Use An Inhaler. Baby Born To Woman Using Her Mother's Transplanted Womb. A baby has been born from the same womb that nurtured his mother. The incredible procedure, in which the womb of a mother was transplanted into her daughter, who then underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) in order to have the child, connects the three generations.

The revolutionary process has been carried out in Sweden, and the baby is the fourth child – all of them boys – to have been born from a transplanted womb, with a fifth baby on the way. This birth follows the first ever successful pregnancy after a uterine transplantation last year, performed by the same medical team at the University of Gothenburg, and led by Dr. Mats Brannstrom. This was part of a trial Brannstrom was running at the time with nine women who were all either born without a uterus in the first place, or had to have theirs removed due to cancer. The new mother had to have her own womb removed in her 20s due to cancer, but last year underwent the operation along with her mother, who is in her 50s.

Does A Mum’s Diet During Pregnancy Influence Her Baby’s Food Preferences? There aren’t too many topics about pregnancy more controversial than what a mother-to-be can and can’t eat. No sooner does a couple announce the news of an impending arrival than a woman is bombarded with a list of rules about what she is and isn’t allowed to put in her mouth. “Don’t eat foods containing soft cheeses, cold meats, soft-serve ice-cream, salads, raw egg, unwashed vegetables…but don’t worry, just take it easy and enjoy the ride”. Yeah, right. While this must drive women barmy, one question that’s always intrigued me is about the flavour of the food. So, what science is out there? Strange-Smelling Newborns The first scientific hint that specific elements of a mother’s diet may affect the developing baby came through intriguing reports from hospitals of infants who were born with distinctive smells.

Two mothers in this case series had given birth to babies that had a distinct smell of cumin. The next step is to explore the biological mechanisms through which this may occur. Do Fetuses Poop? We were all female. UK Approves "3 Parent Baby" Technique. The House of Commons has voted to legalize the use of donor mitochondrial DNA for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) conceptions, allowing the creation of children who will have three biological parents.

The process will allow mothers who carry certain genetic conditions to have children that share most of their genetic code, but without the component that could lead to horrific diseases. The capacity to create human life in this way has existed for almost twenty years. The oldest children born from the technique are now in their teens and show no ill effects. Nevertheless, the technology has been strongly discouraged in the U.S. since 2002 and is currently unavailable everywhere in the world. The decision by the House of Commons, passed 382 to 128, may cause other countries to follow suit, with debate already starting in Australia. Mitochondria are often described as the engines or powerhouses of cells, supplying energy to the rest of the cell, which gets stored as the molecule ATP. St.
