The Housing Revolution Manifesto. The quick summary Housing in the developing world is often dangerous (especially in earthquakes), climatically inappropriate, toxic, wasteful of energy and water, bad for the people who live in it, the people who build it and for the planet at large.

The Housing Revolution Manifesto

This is not about poverty — rich, poor and middle class alike all face problems because of their lack of options. The technologies to overcome these problems exist today — so they should be put to use! To be adopted widely, safer and sustainable housing has to be affordable. It must cost the same as or less than the inferior building materials it’ll replace (such as bricks and cement), but still has to be profitable to the builder (even if the margin is small). It has to appropriate to the region’s climate and culture. It has to be mass-producible or easily reproducible. It has to be appealing, a kind of housing people would want to live in.A Housing Revolution would benefit people worldwide, in developed as well as developing countries. Salone Milan 2011: Story Vases by Front at Spazio Rossana Orlandi

South African women's organization Siyazama Project empowers traditional craftswomen in the KwaZulu-Natal province to address concerns about AIDS through their beadwork. Recorded by Front, the Vases are a rare document of daily life of women in rural, post-apartheid South Africa—dreams and hopes for self and family collide with stories of poverty, gender, HIV and unemployment. "Each woman formed their own story into text by threading glass beads onto metal wires.

These wires were made into vase-shaped moulds, into which glass was blown," explains the designers. Editions in Craft. Editions in Craft (EiC) is an international platform for artists and designers to explore the technical and artistic possibilities of traditional crafts and specialized manufacturing worldwide.

Editions in Craft

Its objective is to help preserve local and traditional crafts by encouraging collaboration with contemporary artists and designers. By merging traditional techniques with contemporary practice, EiC acts as an intermediary between fast-moving technology and production methods and handmade crafts. Rather than "modernizing" craft into marketable products customized for the Western market, EiC develops new cross-cultural models of viable design by joining forces and exchanging expertise, ideas and techniques.

The Digital StudyHall (DSH)

In a nutshell, think of its technical approach as the educational equivalent of Netflix + YouTube. We digitally record live classes by the best grassroots teachers, transmit them on the "Postmanet" (effected by DVDs sent in the postal system), collect them in a large distributed database, and distribute them on DVDs to poor rural and slum schools.

Education experts and teachers use the system to explore pedagogical approaches involving local teachers actively "mediating" the video lessons. By harvesting a "viral phenomenon" of community participation, DSH aims to help train teachers and deliver quality instruction to underprivileged children. The project is a collaboration between computer scientists and education experts. A live deployment of DSH has been operating in India since the summer of 2005. Entrepreneurs India.
