Blue Award 2012 – International Sutdent Competition for Sustainable Architecture. Together with the Society of Architecture and Spatial Design, the Department for Spatial and Sustainable Design from the Vienna University of Technology organizes the BLUE AWARD 2012. The Blue Award is a biennial, international student competition and awards projects addressing the topic of sustainability in the academic fields of architecture, regional planning and urbanism. The economical, cultural and social dimensions of sustainable development should be equal in significance to the classical problems of technique and function. The competition is an open invitation to future-oriented and sustainable solutions. How will our built environment present itself in the coming years? Not a one-dimensional approach leads to results, but rather a comprehensive view of the tasks at hand is necessary in order to provide solutions and protect an environment worth experiencing.

The Blue Award 2012 will be handed out in three categories. Honorary President of the Jury Architect Sir Michael Hopkins. Aerial collage: the new archipelago of incremented kaccha houses rising from a context of well built permanent homes in a typical slum. The problem with social housing has been how to give the most with less money. We have very good examples in Europe, but the constrains are way different than the ones in developing countries. In these countries, almost all the constructions are done by anyone but architects. Clearly, in these countries architects can do something way better than just designing or constructing, developing strategies together with communities to achieve housing solutions that not only address today´s necessities, but that can also be extended over time as families grow, once again by themselves and without architects.

A good example on this is Elemental, lead by Alejandro Aravena, which has been changing not only design aspects of social housing, but also public policy. Currently, they have built and on going projects in Chile, Mexico and more countries. National Sustainable Design Expo | P3 | NCER | Research. One Good Chair: About. By Vijay Govindarajan | 12:07 PM August 26, 2010 Editor’s note: This post was written with Christian Sarkar, a marketing consultant who also works on environmental issues.

David A. Smith, the founder of the Affordable Housing Institute (AHI) tells us that “markets alone will never satisfactorily house a nation’s poorest citizens…whether people buy or rent, housing is typically affordable to only half of the population.” The result? Smith points to a “spontaneous community of self-built or informally built homes — the shanty towns, settlements, and ever-expanding slums that sprout like mushrooms on the outskirts of cities in the developing world.” We started discussing the issue, examining the subject through the lens of reverse innovation. Here are five questions Christian and I asked ourselves: How can organic, self-built slums be turned into livable housing?
