By Andrew Lewis A little while ago, I opened up a trunk that had been buried in the back of an attic for the best part of 100 years. Inside the trunk, I found a box of personal letters and family souvenirs from the early 1900s. At the bottom of the box was a plain white envelope that at first glance seemed to contain a few pieces of bamboo, tissue paper, and decayed rubber.
It took me a few minutes to realize that I was looking at a very old homemade toy. The toy was made of a thin bamboo frame, with tissue paper butterfly wings and cotton-wrapped joints. The wings of the butterfly were painted with brightly colored inks, and a rudimentary bamboo propeller was fitted to the top. The remains of a rubber band were fixed to the little propeller, which was obviously a simple motor for the toy. Materials Directions Step 1: Split the bamboo skewer in half. Step 2: Cut a 6 1/4″ length of bamboo from one of the pieces and use a needle or awl to make a hole in the middle. Related. Halloween Lino Prints. DIY 3-D Letters from Paper | Months ago I happened upon this font on dafont.com called Punched Out. It’s a free download for a set of cut-out layouts with which you can build 3-D, pixel style letters. Just cut along the solid lines, fold along the dotted lines, put some glue on the shaded flaps, stick them together and that’s it.
I printed each letter individually on 8.5 x 11 paper. For the letter “I”, I modified it a bit so it didn’t have the handlebars at the top and bottom of the letter. They make great props, and would be a cheap easy solution for a party or event. Creative Impressions In Clay :: ClayButtons.com :: Handmade Buttons: Studio Saturday with Claybuttons at Art Bead Scene. This week we visit the studio of Tari Sasser at Creative Impressions In Clay. Happy Saturday to all and welcome to the glamorous life of buttons! Wait, it's glamorous?! I didn't get that memo. Above is what I have been working on. Snowflakes and Alpacas...sexy (hmmm, right.) Clay is a muddy business and it only became remotely sexy with the movie Ghost. I haven't thrown on my wheel for quite a while but really need to just for therapy.
Or the mess at hand. Time is something I haven't had a lot of in my studio. I work at a wonderful gallery. I get to explain how items are made and techniques used. The owner of the gallery uses Wholesalecrafts (lots) and also attends shows to purchase items for the gallery. Since I am now uber curious to learn about Wholesalecrafts, My question(s) is: Do you use wholecrafts.com? Do you vend at any of the wholesale shows to sell and market your art? My sincere apologies to the winner of my last Studio Saturday. Feeling sassy as usual. Tari Sasser. WELL WORN: Faux Real: Luxe Snow Globes. When you were a kid, did you ever make an Easter Lily by tracing your hand and rolling it up and adding a pipe cleaner? If you're a mom, has you child ever made one for you? I was thinking about this classic project, and thought it might be fun to make a wearable, and longer-lasting version of it.
To make a Handprint Easter Lily Brooch, you will need: White, yellow and green felt Pinback or safety pin Green embroidery floss Here's what you do: Trace your child's hand. Or you could trace your own hand. Now, you're going to need to reduce it some. I traced my six-year-old sister's hand, and it was about 6 inches tall. Use the template you've made to cut out the two hand sizes from white felt.
Wrap the smaller hand around the yellow fringe. Wrap the larger hand around the smaller hand, keeping it a tight roll. Add the leaf to the side, and begin wrapping the green strip around the base. Carefully add a few stitches to hold everything together. Minnie Outfit, hairclip - and labels! I think most of you know you I have an embroidery machine. Occasionally I get commissioned to sew for others. This one was too cute I had to show you - it's for Miss Daisy's 2nd Birthday - she loves Minnie Mouse. I love the hairbow clip thing - it's just 3 rolled fabric flowers, hot glued together.
Why didn't I think of that for my girls' Minnie Outfits?!?! What I really love is my tag! This is the first opportunity I've had to sew with one - so fun! I just love being able to make my own Minnie Mouse Accessories and outfits - much cuter (and cheaper) than the ones you can buy! Multi-Petalled Ribbon Flower - Sunflower. Borboleta dupla. Tutorials. Snowflakes. With all of this snow outside, we have been making our own inside. I'm sure most of you have made borax crystal strings or snowflakes before - but if you have not, it is a fun project for this time of year.
The boys first made strings of crystals, and then moved up to pipe cleaner snowflakes. easy to make:: In a wide mouth canning jar, add 3 Tbsp of borax per 2 cups of boiling water. stir to dissolve. Make a shape using a pipe cleaner, and hang it from a pencil suspended across the jar mouth using a piece of yarn (don't let it touch the bottom). Pull out and let dry. Once dry, carefully hang in a window! Catching Fireflies; The Faux Decor Version. A lot of us can recall fond childhood memories of running around the neighborhood, on warm summer nights, catching fireflies. We would place ours in a ventilated jar creating a magical glow for a few hours before letting them fly away free, night after night.
Keeping with our whimsical ‘bug’ bath theme, I thought it would be a cute to re-create a little faux jar that would give off that same warm magical glow for my little guy once the sun goes down. I found some small 1/4″ Button Plugs in the wood section of my local craft store. They ran $1.19 and came 22 in a pack. With a little American Glow-in-the-Dark Paint from DecoArt, these tiny little wood turnings instantly became our mini fireflies. For our container, I repurposed one of the many glass food jars that I’ve had tucked away, as I just can’t seem to get rid of them. The lid received a coat of satin nickel spray paint to cover up the logo and any printed writing. I went in the dark closet to test this out and it is just adorable. Felt Photo Frame Magnets and Felt Flower Magnets.
Felt picture frame fridge magnets (and felt flower fridge magnets) Supplies: Different colors of felt, scissors, glue gun, buttons, needle and thread, plastic, pictures, round magnets First, cut out two identical rectangles of fabric about 2 inches wide and 3 inches long (like a wallet size photograph). Cut a window in one of the pieces of felt. Cut out a piece of plastic that is a little bit smaller than the rectangle, but a little bit larger than the window. Using a hot glue gun, glue the plastic rectangle to the inside of the window. Now sew the two felt rectangles together, making sure that the plastic is on the inside. There are so many different fun ways that you could decorate these frames. Now to make this purple flower, cut out 5 small petals. Glue the ends of the petals together by pinching them into the shape shown below and adding glue in all 3 slots.
Now decorate the frames. Insert the pictures. I decided to turn the frames and a handful of felt roses into fridge magnets. S Printable Mazes. Thor Costume (for DailyBuzz Moms 9x9) If you're dropping in from DailyBuzz Moms, then welcome! A couple of weeks ago I finished a funny viking Halloween costume for my youngest son, Baden. You can see it HERE. Ever since then, my oldest son Rex has been dying for me to make his costume. He chose Thor. Ridiculously good looking, incredibly strong, and a cool hammer? We wanted it to be the true old school Thor, so this picture was our inspiration. So. let me give you a run down of the details. I ripped open the boxes and cut out several cone shapes. I spray painted it black and them dry brushed silver over the top, to give it a real metal look.
I cut chunks off chunks of the wig and glued it around the inside of the hat. Ta-dah! Let's break down the outfit. I purchased a black onesie in the largest size I could find. The boot covers aren't too hard to make. The cape was made using my Mom's cape pattern which you can find HERE. We already had the hammer. And there you have it. Thanks for dropping in. Tutorial: Homemade Sidewalk Chalk. By Michelle Vackar, Modern Handmade Child One of our favorite outside activities at our home is drawing with chalk on the driveway. You can play hopscotch, four-square, and of course draw and create silly stories. My daughters and I were talking one day as we played hopscotch about how to make chalk and I thought to myself, let’s try it!
It ended up being quite a lot of fun. What you will need: • Toilet paper or paper towel tubes • Scissors • Duct tape • Wax paper • Small bucket or disposable container to make the recipe • ¾ cup of warm water • 1 ½ cups Plaster of Paris • 2-3 tablespoons of tempera paint • Paper bag or a “mess mat” ** we made six tubes of chalk – we simply doubled the above recipe Step 1: If you are using paper towel tubes, cut each tube in half, so it is roughly the length of a toilet paper roll tube. Step 2: Cover one end of each tube with duct table to hold the contents within. Step 3: Cut as many pieces of wax paper as you have tubes.
