Human Herpesvirus 6: An Emerging Pathogen. Heartland virus (HRTV) is a recently described phlebovirus initially isolated in 2009 from 2 humans who had leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Serologic assessment of domestic and wild animal populations near the residence of 1 of these persons showed high exposure rates to raccoons, white-tailed deer, and horses. To our knowledge, no laboratory-based assessments of viremic potential of animals infected with HRTV have been performed. We experimentally inoculated several vertebrates (raccoons, goats, chickens, rabbits, hamsters, C57BL/6 mice, and interferon-α/β/γ receptor–deficient [Ag129]) mice with this virus. All animals showed immune responses against HRTV after primary or secondary exposure.

However, neutralizing antibody responses were limited. Covering Haiti: When the Media Is the Disaster | CommonDreams.or. Soon after almost every disaster the crimes begin: ruthless, selfish, indifferent to human suffering, and generating far more suffering. The perpetrators go unpunished and live to commit further crimes against humanity. They care less for human life than for property.

They act without regard for consequences. I'm talking, of course, about those members of the mass media whose misrepresentation of what goes on in disaster often abets and justifies a second wave of disaster. Within days of the Haitian earthquake, for example, the Los Angeles Times ran a series of photographs with captions that kept deploying the word "looting.

" Another photo was labeled: "Looting continued in Haiti on the third day after the earthquake, although there were more police in downtown Port-au-Prince. " A third image was captioned: "A looter makes off with rolls of fabric from an earthquake-wrecked store. " People were then still trapped alive in the rubble. What Would You Do? Since the founding of our country, a debate has raged over the nature of corporations and whether they should be entitled to the same right to legal “personhood” as actual people. It was back in 1886 that a Supreme Court decision (Santa Clara County v. But more recently, in December 2002, Porter Township, Pennsylvania unanimously passed an ordinance denying corporate claims to personhood. Handicap Equipment. It endures poor nutrition, obsessive work habits, smoking, inadequate hydration, emotional traumas, and other manifestations we bring upon our selves. In addition, our body must take on the everyday strains we cannot control. Improper occupational positions, injuries, frequent weather changes, relative humidity, and personal tragedies dictate our lifestyles without control. The fittest of human beings can have unbelievable postural concerns. The simple act of driving a car can create postural imbalances leading to chronic pain. But somehow the body adapts to the effects of life and for many years can thrive despite the changes forced upon it. However, hope is not eternal. So often where the pain is occurring is not the culprit.

Try standing at attention in front of a mirror for one minute with your glutes engaged, abs tucked in, chest forward, shoulders back, and chin in tight. Posture can also represent both physical and emotional wellbeing. For Women With Pain Disorders, Sex Can Be Excruciating Experienc. In the movies and on television, everybody seems to love having sex, but in real life sexual intercourse is an unbearable experience for many women. For years Chris Veasley, Allison Nugent and Sara Fontaine suffered in silence with an embarrassing secret: They did not feel pleasure with sex. Instead, they said, they felt excruciating pain. For Veasley, 33, of Providence, R.I., the unbearable vaginal pain extended beyond sex to everyday activities like walking. Even light contact from blue jeans could be too agonizing to bear. "Riding a bike, sitting for long periods and something as light as touching the area with a Q-tip will send women kind of flying off the exam table," she told ABC News' Dr.

Timothy Johnson. "The best way to describe it is having sandpaper rubbed on an open wound," Fontaine said. But all the women said what's almost harder than the physical pain is the emotional toll of suffering from such a mysterious condition without a clear diagnosis. We will provide you with a dropdown of all your saved articles when you are registered and signed in. Cervical disc disease may be the most common cause of neck pain. It's caused by an abnormality in one or more discs, the cushions that lie between the neck bones (vertebrae). When a disc is damaged, due to arthritis or an unknown cause, it can lead to neck pain from inflammation or muscle spasms.

In severe cases, pain and numbness can occur in the arms from nerve irritation or damage. While pain relievers, physical therapy, neck traction, and as a last resort, surgery, can help ease neck pain from cervical disc disease, there are also home remedies you can use to help relieve pain and speed the healing process. Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine. Health | Ocean coral 'offers pain therapy' A compound harvested from soft coral off the coast of Taiwan could provide a new treatment for pain from intractable nerve damage, experts say. Traditional painkillers like aspirin and even morphine often do little to take the edge off neuropathic pain. But research in the British Journal of Pharmacology suggests Capnella imbricata, or Kenya Tree Coral, could provide relief. The Taiwanese scientists report promising early trial results in rats. Several important drugs have already been developed from chemicals found in coral reef organisms. Among these is the antiviral AZT, a treatment for people with HIV, which is based on chemicals extracted from a Caribbean reef sponge. Reefs have also yielded treatments for cardiovascular diseases, ulcers, leukaemia and skin cancer.

Deep treasures The reef there is said to be home to more than 200 different types of coral. Some even get unpleasant or painful feelings even when there is no stimulus. LET'S TALK PAIN. Data Presentation Key in Healthcare Decision-Makin. How doctors portray clinical risks and benefits -- statistically and visually -- can influence the decisions patients make about healthcare, and whether those decisions reflect their own values, two randomized studies found. "Relevant, reliable, and accessible information about the effects of interventions is essential for informed choices about healthcare," wrote Cheryl L.L. Carling, PhD, of the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services in Oslo, and colleagues.

"The manner in which this information is presented affects how it is understood by both patients and physicians, and their subsequent healthcare decisions," the Norwegian investigators stated. To explore these concepts they undertook two studies as part of a Web-based program evaluating different methods of presenting research evidence.

The purpose was to help patients make decisions about an intervention consistent with their own values. The displays were: At that point, 22.3% overall chose treatment. False. Frequency United States Epstein-Barr virus is not a reportable infection, and the exact frequency of symptomatic primary infection is not known. By age 5 years, approximately 50% of the US population is infected. During childhood, primary infection is usually asymptomatic or associated with mild elevation of liver function test findings.

The incidence of acute infectious mononucleosis was approximately 45 cases per 100,000 population per year in the early 1970s, with the highest incidence in individuals aged 15-24 years. Roommates of students with primary Epstein-Barr virus infection develop seroconversion at the same rate as the general population of college students. Approximately 90% of the US population is infected with Epstein-Barr virus by age 25 years. Epstein-Barr virus infection does not occur in epidemics and has relatively low transmissibility.

International Mortality/Morbidity Most primary Epstein-Barr virus infections are asymptomatic. Race Sex Age. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: eMedicine Infectious Diseases. Today News Reference Education Log In Register Print Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Updated: Jul 13, 2012 What would you like to print? Background Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by a state of chronic fatigue that persists for more than 6 months, has no clear cause, and is accompanied by cognitive difficulties. Various unrelated infectious diseases (eg, pneumonia, Epstein-Barr virus [EBV] infection, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infections) appear to lead to a state of prolonged fatigue in some persons.

The cause of CFS is unknown, but the disorder is probably an infectious disease with immunologic manifestations. Because no direct tests aid in the diagnosis of CFS, the diagnosis is one of exclusion but that meets certain clinical criteria, which are further supported by certain nonspecific tests. Because no cause of CFS has been determined, no effective therapy exists for CFS. Diagnostic criteria In children, CFS is poorly defined. Next Section: Pathophysiology Previous. Serologic studies have distinguished 66 human enterovirus serotypes on the basis of antibody neutralization tests. Additional antigenic variants have been defined within several of the serotypes on the basis of reduced or nonreciprocal cross-neutralization between variant strains. On the basis of their pathogenesis in humans and animals, the enteroviruses were originally classified into four groups, polioviruses, Coxsackie A viruses (CA), Coxsackie B viruses (CB), and echoviruses, but it was quickly realized that there were significant overlaps in the biological properties of viruses in the different groups.

Enteroviruses isolated more recently are named with a system of consecutive numbers: EV68, EV69, EV70, and EV71, etc.[1] Species and genetics[edit] The enterovirus genus includes the following twelve species:[5] Within these twelve species are the serotypes: Enterovirus. This study clearly documented that, within the general population, persons with CFS were significantly more likely to use medications than non-fatigued individuals. However, CFS and control subjects used similar types of drugs. We are not aware of comparable population-based reports of medication use by people with CFS or with fatiguing illnesses.

CFS-associated reports are primarily medication trials and were recently reviewed by Whiting et al [6]. It is likely not a coincidence that of the few population reports regarding medication use in general, most describe use of pain and sleep medication since problems with pain and sleep are commonly reported to medical practitioners. However, most medications identified in this study may not reflect treatment of fatigue or other symptoms of CFS. Comparable data for medication use in general in the United States are difficult to find. Table 2. CFS. At this time, there is no blood test, brain scan, or other lab test to diagnose CFS. The syndrome is diagnosed by exclusion through: Documenting the patient's medical history Performing a thorough medical examination Conducting cognitive function tests Ruling out other conditions that may be causing or exacerbating the fatigue (and/or identifying and treating those that can be treated) Fulfilling the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for the definition of CFS Monitoring the patient over time to see if other underlying conditions arise Laboratory tests can be useful to help diagnose and manage other conditions with similar symptoms and disorders that must be identified and treated before a diagnosis of CFS can be made.

The CDC recommends a few general tests, bulleted in the next section. Laboratory tests Other tests may be ordered to follow up abnormal findings on the general tests and as warranted by the affected individual's symptoms. ARUP Consult: Search Results. Herpes virus 6.
