Two axes of strong competences: development of tools to simulate the acoustic phenomena; innovation and custom design through the control of building materials. The School Music Room - Critical Design Considerations. School music programs teach students discipline, teamwork and how to express themselves in constructive ways that enrich the community.

The School Music Room - Critical Design Considerations

This is why top schools invest in music education - an investment that begins with specialized rooms for music rehearsal and performance. Many believe that designing a space for music instruction need be no more than a high-ceilinged room of regular proportions lined with acoustical panels. Steven Holl - House. It’s a real challenge to take notes while listening to Daniel Libeskind’s Proms Lecture 2002 (RealAudio stream; listed in BBC ’s Architecture on 3 program archive ).

Daniel Libeskind’s Proms Lecture [Tesugen]

You just can’t keep up with him; he not only talks fast, but spurts interesting ideas, so you have to rewind all the time. I guess it would be better to just relax and listen, and pause in five-minute intervals to dump thoughts. I don’t recommend reading these notes instead of listening to the actual lecture. March 20th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal Urban Concept – The proposal for the Performing Arts Center in Taipei creates a world-class institution which is characterized by both its response to its urban and cultural environment, and by its formal and structural elegance.

Taipei Performing Arts Center in Taiwan by B+U

The project embraces the concept of a Grand Plaza as being a center hub between the Shilin night market and the TRTS Jiantan station. This is achieved by lifting the multiform theater off the ground and creating a covered outdoor linkage space between Cheng De Road and Wen Lin Road. This linkage space is the center access to the grand foyer and all three theaters. On the south side the Grand Plaza transitions into a garden that gently slopes up towards Jiantan road to allow for shops and restaurants to be placed underneath and accessible from street level. Magazine 57. Three recent events triggered my removal from inertia , un-digging from the past a beloved subject in which I had immersed myself way back , in the late sixties, when in London, at the PLACE, back to back around the corner to the Flaxman House at Flaxman Terrace, and the association with its dancers, particularly one from my own homeland...To this one, the various 8mm films, the Videos, and all the other items in my archives, books on Dance and Music, along with the particular piece below, are dedicated !

My next stimulation , was a book I just read, by five teacher/architects, all teachers of Architecture at the Athens Polytechnic, entitled "Music and Architecture parallel routes: Countepoint as a tool of Music and architectural composition" (Mousikes kai Arxitektonikes symporefsis"/ "Μουσικες και αρχιτεκτονικες συμπορεύσεις: η αντίστιξη ως εργαλείο μουσικής και αρχιτεκτονικής σύνθεσης" , Πατακης , Αθήνα 2011 . At Smart Geoemtry 2011, the Responsive Acoustic Surfaces group began an investigation into the sound scattering properties of doubly ruled surfaces.

sg2011 cluster: responsive acoustic surfacing

The work was inspired by Gaudí's architecture, which is almost exclusively built from doubly ruled surfaces, and that has a surprising lack of audible reverberation considering the surfaces are all reflective. During Smart Geometry 2011 this phenomena was investigated at three different scales: in digital simulations, in 1:10 prototypes and in a 1:1 prototype. The digital prototypes: Using custom software built on top of Open Cascade, the participants developed strategies for populating hyperboloids across surfaces. These were tested in a Virtual Anechoic Chamber to test the sound scattering properties. Project 1 - ARCH 689: Simulating Dynamical Features of Escape Using Grasshopper Physics Engine. Project 1 - ARCH 689: Simulating Dynamical Features of Escape Using Grasshopper Physics Engine

In this report, I will show how Kangaroo physics engine in Grasshopper can be applied to simulate crowd behavior. This simulation is accurate enough to receive support from recent literature in this area. Evolutionary Algorithms. This grasshopper definition was made when the Galapagos evolutionary solver was released for GH.

Evolutionary Algorithms

The inspiration for this simple approach on evolutionary algorithms was drawn by a genetic algorithm I have written in Processing, that I might share later on. It is a fairly simple way to understand how Genetic Algorithms perform an how this can be implemented through GH. Millipede : ISO surface test. Neoarchaic. A collection of point based curve and surface equations GEODEX is a collection of mathematical curve and surface equations for Grasshopper 3d. Using a combination of Polar, Parametric, and Cartesian equations as best suited, simply plug in a list or tree of unitized numbers (t) or points (uv) values into each component and they will be evaluated returning x,y,z coordinates. Most components include additional input parameters which manipulate the curve.

These fall into two type, (r) values (radius & length) which relate to rhino units, and (p) values which are unit less variable parameters of the equation. Components fall under the categories of: NeoArchaic Design. Marzo 2011. Responsive Acoustic Surfacing Cluster - Smart Geometry 2011, Copenhagen... INHABIT SOUNDSCAPE. The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment matteomelioli@yahoo.co.uk Abstract In 'Space', the object - or architecture - is generated by a cumulative process of information (geometrical transformations, visual sequences, sound structure…) directly related to the psychological and physiological user’s frames.

Each interaction transforms the visible environment in a dynamic, elastic and multidirectional imaginary space. The relationship between the object-space system (geometrical and phenomenological determinate) and the body-mental projection system (subjective view /aural decoded data ) induces new modes of perception strictly connected to the inner spatial geometry and its physical reflecting (aural and lighting) phenomena. Sound as well light reveals cryptic information about the space via echo and reverberations. This process enhances how the same acoustic phenomena distorts the architectural space creating “ghost-spaces”. Introduction Geometry as frozen music Left: Venice and St. Frozen: Sound as space. Fischer & Maus: Reflection, Widrig & Booshan: Binaural 5 Days Off MEDIA: Frozen Wed 2 through Sat 26 July 2008 Melkweg Mediaroom & Paradiso, Amsterdam Frozen (part of the 5 Days Off MEDIA festival) is an exhibition of experiments in the representation of sound in media beyond the auditory.

It examines the sound signal as a virtual space, presenting possible mappings that visualize or interpret the structures contained within the soundwaves. Frozen was proposed and commissioned by Jan Hiddink and the 5 Days Off MEDIA festival in Amsterdam, and consists exclusively of original work. It was conceived with Generator.x 2.0 as a conceptual reference (all four artists in the show were also involved in Generator.x 2.0), but with a clearly defined focus: The representation of sound as spatial structures, realized as physical objects through the use of digital fabrication technologies.
