Home. Loves: meditation (and we’re not the only ones) - Beautilicious. Whether you think of it as a way of life or more of a hobby for ‘hippies’, most of us are aware (to an extent) of the benefits of meditation and have witnessed it grow in popularity in recent years.
Meditation courses and drop-ins have made the peaceful practise open to everyone, while books and - most recently - apps mean that the quest for inner peace is now something we can incorporate into lunch breaks and even journeys on public transport. With a huge celebrity following and high profile figures like David Lynch and George Lucas campaigning to make meditation a part of the school day, it seems the peaceful practice is set to become a big part of our lives.
So what’s all the fuss about and how do we get involved? Why has the world has gone crazy for meditation? The Western world has been fascinated by meditation since The Beatles embraced it and brought it back with them from a trip to India in the late 1960s. But it’s not just A-listers who have found use for meditation. Papel Picado. Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday for remembering and honoring loved ones, is just around the corner.
Many of us may know this holiday for the artistry and imagery surrounding its celebration — the sugar skulls, altars, candles, offerings, and marigolds. For this week’s How-Tuesday project, paper artist Yreina Flores Ortiz has created a papel picado project in honor of Dia de los Muertos. Yreina makes beautiful paper-cut work that can be found in her Etsy shop and on her website. She recently completed a large-scale artwork for the central panel of an altar to honor victims of breast cancer for a Dia de los Muertos exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art. (More on that here and at the bottom of this article.) The Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd.

Awhile back on Pinterest, I saw this idea for etching glass and immediately repinned it to my "DIY--Things to Make" Pinterest Board . Last week as I started preparing for an upcoming party for King-Man's MBA students at the Washington University OLIN School of Business, I thought it would be fun to etch "OLIN" on glasses to give our guests as a party favor. The party will be a beer/food pairing dinner (more about that in an upcoming post), so I purchased pint glasses for etching in keeping with the beer theme. The bad news: My first few tries didn't look nearly as good as Martha's examples on her website.
