I just spent two full days in a phenomenal leadership simulation program entitled, “Magnetic Leadership” that was conceived, created and offered by Profitability Business Simulations. I had the privilege of playing the role of the customer throughout the simulation, and then coaching the teams and their leaders after each simulation round was completed. During each round, one person on each team was appointed “CEO” and was responsible for determining the overall direction and strategy for their team of eight people.

They had one hour to prepare the team for the 10-minute, high-stress simulation in which they were given a business challenge along with a fickle customer (me) and tasked with meeting the challenge while satisfying the customer. One of the issues that large brands must worry about — especially franchise brands — is IF and HOW local affiliates and employees decide to participate online.

For example, take a look at a well-known brand like real estate giant Century 21. In addition to the official @C21realestate handle managed by Corp Comms in Parsippany, there are over 350 Century21 employees and/or franchisees on Twitter. Their Twitter handles range from @C21_SUNBELT to @Cntury21, from @Century21Seller to @RealtorToCall (and any number of @firstnamelastname combinations, i.e., no C21 affiliation). Some of these real estate twitterati have embraced the medium — and in fact, many of the realtors have 100–400 followers! In other words, there is no rhyme or reason, no overarching strategy, no way to consolidate nor highlight the company’s massive scale in order to present a compelling and unified presence on one of the world’s top social networks.

While President Barack Obama makes his annual address starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time, the official White House Web site will have a live stream of the speech, along with charts and statistics to provide context and emphasize key points, according to the Obama administration.

"We're putting the finishing touches on a new feature for WhiteHouse.gov that will offer an enhanced viewer experience for President Obama's State of the Union address," wrote Macon Phillips, the White House director of new media, in a blog post. "This Enhanced SOTU feature is just one of many ways we are working to provide as much information as possible and answer your questions about the speech. " And immediately after the State of the Union address, the White House will host a question-and-answer event on Twitter.
