I was lucky enough to have kind coworkers who were willing to not only set type for me, but also show me how the machines worked. My first bindery operated a lot of old machinery (like, don't-get-too-close-or-you-could-lose-a-hand machinery). One machine in particular that brought us books from all over to be custom type set: The Ludlow. The Ludlow Typograph is a hot metal typesetting system. The machine actually held molten metal, which took hours to heat and melt (which costs a pretty penny, I am sure).

Now, the brass type that is used is actually a mold for the Ludlow to shoot the molten metal into, creating the "slug," or metal stamp. Why do I love this type of stamping? This type of stamping isn't really feasible for my work at home, as hot metal stamping is commonly done with giant presses. How do you add lettering to your handmade books? Yes, Nick has joined the found object assemblage art club. Now, everywhere he goes, you'll find him looking down. He doesn't want to miss out on some undiscovered treasure he can reuse. Nick has always collected odd stuff; he likes to fix things, and bits and pieces always come in hand. But he got inspired to make some art when he saw a book about Steampunk contraptions. That's what I told myself, anyway. The truth is, I was scared. Scared my art journal wouldn't be any good. Afraid that I wouldn't like art journaling (and everyone loves it, right?). Well, after facing my fears I accidentally stumbled on a great way of finding time to keep a creative journal. Here's how it works: 1. 2. 3. The trouble is, aside from my small fabric collages, I haven't been making embellished quilts recently. Then I remembered Michelle Muska's Embellished Stuffed Yo-yos from the first season of "Quilting Arts TV. " She makes theses gems in a variety of sizes: to embellish fiber art and accessories or as pincushions. Michelle makes the yoyos out of scraps of cotton, velvet, or silk. The pincushions measure approximately 4"-6" across. How to Build Under-Cabinet Drawers & Increase Kitchen Storage - Step by Step. If you've ever looked for a way of altering photos by adding color without ruining the photo or obliterating the details, this digital photo art technique is for you.

In the January/February 2013 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, Patti Brady described two digital art tutorials for making a transparent skin with acrylic paint or medium. Once complete, you can paint the back of the skin selectively, adding skin tones or clothing colors. The color will show through to the front without obscuring the photo's details. (Yes, you can add color just by altering photos with digital software, but this method gives more texture and a painterly quality to the results.)

These are the directions for Patti's technique using a laser printer. Creating Transparent Digital SkinsBy Patti Brady Materials Directions: 1. 2. 3.
