University guide 2012: University of Greenwich

The main campus is on the banks of the Thames in three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. Other sites are Avery Hill, in an 86-acre park in Eltham, south-east London, and Medway, another charming campus full of Edwardian redbrick and ivy, near Chatham's historic dockyard. As a result, the 28,000 students are spread between city and more rural locations. Music and dance are everywhere and there's a real passion for life (and football!). But Brazil's social problems and poverty are no secret either. Our voluntary placements involve working with kids in Sao Paulo. Some are street-children, many are neglected; all of them live tough lives. They need trusted adults, like you, to encourage them and help them stay out of trouble with fun projects, football, surf, IT, music and more. It’s not easy; these are among our tougher placements and participants need loads of determination - but the rewards are fantastic and Brazil itself is unforgettably beautiful. What will I do in Brazil? Since 2005 we have worked with an inspirational and well regarded Youth Centre project in Sao Paulo.

The writing on the wall

Its large, colonial-era walls and labyrinth of back alleys drip with graffiti that is more diverse and original than any other city in the world. Well, that was until a few weeks ago, when preparations for the Commonwealth games brought a tidal wave of grey paint, obliterating years of unique and vibrant culture overnight. This may seem like no great tragedy to readers of the Daily Mail, but Melbourne's graffiti scene is a key factor in its status as the continent's hothouse of creativity and wilful individualism.

Melbourne became a hub of stencilling for reasons no one seems particularly able to explain. Its laid-back atmosphere and sense of isolation most probably have something to do with it. Witty, playful, often angry, the free rein taken by Melbourne's street artists became about much more than just daubing on a wall. Instead, the council doubled its anti-graffiti budget.
