DESCRIPTION OF BOOKNew York jeweller Garet James has her fair share of problems: money, an elderly father, a struggling business. One day she comes across an antiques shop she’d never noticed before. The owner possesses an old silver box that’s been sealed shut. Could she open it, perhaps? She does, and that night strange things begin to happen. It’s as if her world – our world – has shifted slightly, revealing another, parallel place that co-exists without our knowledge: the world of the Fey… Garet learns that one of her ancestors was 'the Watchtower': an immortal chosen to stand guard over the human and the fey worlds – a role that Garet has, unwittingly, inherited from her mother. Review; Garet is a very likeable character with a wonderful sense of humor.

And now it’s out of the box…and it has no intention of going back in. Lee Carroll is a pseudonym for husband and wife writing team, Carol Goodman and Lee Slonimsky. The focus of the story is 26 year old Garet (short for Margaret) James, a Jeweler living in New York. You definitely need to suspend belief to read this book; it features a myriad of fantastic creatures including fairies, dragons and a vampire and has a wonderfully detailed mythology behind it which I really enjoyed. Book Review : “Black Swan Rising” by Lee Carroll. | Juniper's Jungle.

I must admit that I haven’t read a lot of grown up urban fantasy though I’ve covered a lot of the YA bases. I was really intrigued therefore to read this, the first installment in a new urban fantasy trilogy. Garet is a jewellery maker living and working in New York. She stumbles across an antiques store when she’s looking for shelter from the rain and is asked for help by the owner. He has a silver box with a seal that matched the ring Garet wears, an heirloom passed down from her mother. He’s unable to open the box so asks Garet if she would be able to do so. Taking the box and agreeing to open it is a life changing moment, she falls into a new life realising that everything she thought she knew is wrong, or merely half a truth. I really enjoyed this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will certainly be looking forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy. “Black Swan Rising” is published in paperback by Bantam Press on 25th November 2010 in the UK.

Like this: Black Swan Rising by Lee Carroll. I was given a copy of Black Swan Rising by Lee Carroll to review by Transworld. It's due for release on 25th November 2010. This is what Amazon has to say about the book:Jeweller Garet James isn't the same as everyone else. She just doesn't know it yet. With her fair share of problems – money (lack of), an elderly father, a struggling business – Garet should be just like any other young, feisty, single New Yorker. I think the first thing I must address here is the fact that it's a paranormal romance. Black Swan Rising is very well written. I really loved Garet's name. One of the comments I was going to make was that the ending leaves you wondering what comes next for Garet although you have the definite idea of one specific thing which will come at some point. Black Swan Rising by Lee Carroll. Synopsis: Jeweller Garet James isn't the same as everyone else. She just doesn't know it yet.

With her fair share of problems – money (lack of), an elderly father, a struggling business – Garet should be just like any other young, feisty, single New Yorker. If only it was that simple... It begins with the old silver box that had been soldered shut. Only it’s then that things start to change. And now it’s out of the box...and it has no intention of going back in. I read Black Swan Rising in September when I got stricken down with a rubbish cold. Lee Carroll has managed to give mystery and magic back to the urban fantasy genre that has become over populated with kick ass females and sparkly vampires. Garet's strength lies in her ability to be both a creative person and a realist, not usually traits we see that go hand in hand, or at least not in the books and movies, when artists are portrayed. What I enjoyed about BSR is that Garet grows so much within the context of the story.
