Elias Lönnrot nacque il 9 aprile 1802, a Sammatti nella regione di Uusimaa, nel sud della Finlandia. Una cittadina molto piccola e rurale, che ancora oggi conta non più di millecinquecento abitanti su un territorio di circa 85 Km2, per una densità di circa diciassette persone per Km2. Il comune di Sammatti è stato soppresso nel 2009, oggi è sotto la giurisdizione del comune di Lohja, una cittadina non molto distante.
Quando Elias Lönnrot nacque, la Finlandia era un granducato russo e rimarrà Granducato di Finlandia fino al 6 dicembre 1917 , “itsenäisyyspäivä” o giorno dell'Indipendenza, dopo lo scoppio della rivoluzione russa del febbraio '17.
