Root Metaphor FC is the philosophy of science at the root of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Relational Frame Theory (RFT). All philosophies have a Root Metaphor, and the root metaphor for FC is "The act in context. " Said another way... We look at the Function of a behavior (Toward or Away) in the context (both sensory and mental) of the behavior.

Walking (behavior) on a beach while you are in a good mood is a context. Now let's turn that up a notch. Walking and mooding on a beach are one context, and walking and mooding on a city street is another context. We can shorten that more from the Functional Contextual view... Being on a beach and being on a city street. We can further shorten that to... Being. The Intensive Outpatient PTSD Program (IOP) is an intensive ACT training experience. ACT is presented to a cohort of veterans in a "workshop" format across 14 classes (groups) in five days. All aspects of ACT (Let Go, Show Up, and Get Moving) are experienced in the 14 sessions. Each morning the staff meet to talk about the current cohort, program development, Functional Contextualism, Relational Frame Theory and ACT. The PTSD IOP strives to remain on the cutting edge of effective treatment for veterans struggling with trauma-related suffering. We have recently started up a strong research program in conjunction with the University of Maine at Orono. Across four weeks you will learn additional exercises to strengthen your core skills.
