Dancing on a Bionic Leg: The Best TED Talk of 2014

A double amputee after a climbing accident 30 years ago, Herr wears his own technology, and he described what it does in a talk at the TED conference in Vancouver last week. Herr’s work is a serious step up from prostheses. His bionic parts don’t just dumbly follow the limbs they are attached to; they are mechanical and communicate with the nervous system through electricity. Wearers control the limbs by sending normal movement signals through their body that can be interpreted by the chips on board. Herr said his bionic limbs are also much more comfortable because they are custom-made using models of an individual’s tissue composition, and their stiffness changes dynamically. The ultimate goal of Herr and his Biomechatronics Group at the MIT Media Lab is to end the notion of disability, he said. More Posts About TED 2014. Not only has much of the choreography changed since the company premiered this production five years ago, but the people involved have also evolved. Principal Dancer Janessa Touchet, who is performing the role of Juliet for the second time, discusses how the experience has been different this time. When she watched herself on video from the production five years ago, she says she hardly recognized herself — and not just because her hair was darker.

She says that back then she was more focused on perfecting her technique than her character development. “Last time, I was nervous because it was more like me coming out of my shell,” Touchet says. Juliet is certainly a big role to tackle, requiring both physical and dramatic chops. Touchet is now in the first cast with Principal Dancer Cervilio Amador, who’s performing the Romeo role for the first time. “It’s been so much fun!” “Definitely!” Hip-hop dance. 1980s films, television shows, and the Internet have contributed to introducing hip-hop dance outside of the United States.

Since being exposed, educational opportunities and dance competitions have helped maintain its presence worldwide. Europe hosts several international hip-hop competitions such as the UK B-Boy Championships, Juste Debout, and EuroBattle. Australia hosts a team-based competition called World Supremacy Battlegrounds and Japan hosts a two-on-two competition called World Dance Colosseum. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often "freestyle" (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions—colloquially referred to as "battles". Crews, freestyling, and battles are identifiers of this style. History[edit] At the same time breaking was developing in New York, other styles were being created in California.

But what do you really know about hip hop dance? Did you know that this energetic dancing evolved with hip hop music and street jazz? It’s true. Today, hip hop has taken its place alongside ballet, tap, jazz and ballroom dancing; to name a few. The first mention of hip hop dance dates back to the 70’s when some new moves were introduced to the dance world to accompany the funky sounds of hip hop music that was also being discovered.

Across the United States from the ‘Boogie Down’ Bronx, New York to the ‘Beat Street’ corners of Compton, California, young people everywhere took to this new style of dancing that included such feats as breaking, popping, locking, gliding, ticking, vibrating and krumping.
