What to do about self-injury as an educator, teacher, school psychologist or counselor? | Educators and Self-Injury. Educators of all types are in a unique position to help kids. Many students may not have all of their basic needs recognized and met within their home environments. Do not assume that parents or caregivers are noticing and taking care of your students’ needs.

Don’t ignore it- trust your gut There are two major principles to keep in mind when encountering a student whom you know or suspect is self-injuring. The number one thing to remember is that you should not ignore anything suspicious. If your gut instinct tells you that something is going wrong with a particular student, follow up on it. Extend an attitude of calm understanding The second major thing to keep in mind is to do your very best to present an understanding and sympathetic attitude. I’ve done a little asking around and learning about what to do if someone wants help with alcohol or drug addiction or with an addicted family member. Important contributors to what I have learned was a tour of a top notch recovery program for teens, attending Al-Anon and Nar-Anon meetings with a friend and sending for their literature, knowing those struggling with these issues, asking questions of experts, and reading the best book I could find on the subject, Everything Changes: Help for Families of Recovering Addicts by Beverly Conyers.

Here are the important points I have taken away from my experiences with quotes from Conyers’ book. The experts often point addicts and family members to Alcoholics Anonymous and the related groups of Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Alateen, and Nar-Anon. The first two are for addicts who want help and the other three are for family members of alcoholics and drug addicts. Conyers, Beverly. (2009). Counseling Youth with Depression - Home.
