Sauf que ce monde-Athas-a été ravagé dans un lointain passé par des guerres interminables et l'usage d'une magie destructrice qui l'ont tranformé en un désert implacable et souillé. Ce monde désolé a oublié les dieux, pas de religion ici, circulez. La civilisation s'est effondrée et le nomadisme est la règle. Seules subsistent quelques cités-états dirigés par des rois-sorciers sanguinaires. Sous le soleil coexistent des races elles aussi corrompues par une histoire torturée : les orcs ont la peau rouge, sont pacifistes et végétariens, les nains sont glabres et les elfes sont les parangons du vice.
