» The Little Guide to Contentedness. ‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu Post written by Leo Babauta. There has been little in my life that has made as much an impact as learning to be content — with my life, where I am, what I’m doing, what I have, who I’m with, who I am. This little trick changes everything. Let’s take a look at my life before contentedness: I was addicted to junk food and fast food, and overweight and unhealthy.
And as I learned to be content, here was what changed: I learned to be happy with healthier food, with less food, and my health improved and waistline shrunk. That’s just the start. This is not a magical state, and doesn’t require any new tools or books. Learning to Be Content If you are in a bad place in your life, and are unhappy with everything about it (job, relationship, yourself, house, habits, etc.), it can be a miserable thing. I’ve been in situations where you might think things were bad, and sometimes I was very unhappy, and other times I was happy. The Contented Life Self image. Camel Crush Cigarettes Favored By Teen Smokers, Increasing Market Share By Over 20 Percent.
Which tobacco brand is increasing its cigarette sales among youngsters? Camel gained over 20 percent more market share among 12-17 year olds and over 60 percent among 18-25 year olds in 2010, the most recent year analyzed, according to Citi's decade-long brand-specific study of youth smoker trends. Newport also bumped up its share over 10 percent among the first group and nearly 30 percent among the latter, while Marlboro remains the most popular brand among young people. (h/t Business Insider) While overall cigarette use declined among teens, it is believed that Camel gained market share due to their Camel Crush, a cigarette that releases menthol flavoring through its filter when pinched.
The Food and Drug Administration advised a ban on menthol cigarettes in March precisely because of their popularity among underage consumers. Tobacco companies have been accused of targeting youth in the past. 1 in 2 new graduates are jobless or underemployed. WASHINGTON (AP) — The college class of 2012 is in for a rude welcome to the world of work. A weak labor market already has left half of young college graduates either jobless or underemployed in positions that don't fully use their skills and knowledge. Young adults with bachelor's degrees are increasingly scraping by in lower-wage jobs — waiter or waitress, bartender, retail clerk or receptionist, for example — and that's confounding their hopes a degree would pay off despite higher tuition and mounting student loans.
An analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press lays bare the highly uneven prospects for holders of bachelor's degrees. Opportunities for college graduates vary widely. While there's strong demand in science, education and health fields, arts and humanities flounder. Median wages for those with bachelor's degrees are down from 2000, hit by technological changes that are eliminating midlevel jobs such as bank tellers. View gallery Employment & CareerEducation. See what’s hot… Facebook Timeline officially rolled out to Brand Pages on March 30, but we're guessing that many marketers still don't know how to milk the new design for all that it's worth. A recent study found that fan growth after Timeline has "slowed slightly"— is your company experiencing a bit of a slowdown? If so, we have some tips for you. Some best practices apply to all social media platforms — be human, be genuine, reply to fans, foster conversation, don't be gimmicky, and don't syndicate the same content to every social channel, etc. 1. Timeline is much more image-focused than earlier iterations of Brand Pages, so start snapping. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Facebook Falls Back to IPO Price. Scrutiny of Mitt Romney's Character Reveals Psychopathic Tendencies. People tend to associate the word psychopath with serial killers or other violent criminals. The word conjures up images of anti-social monsters who are unable to fit into everyday society. This makes sense since everything in our media teaches us that psychopaths are predatory murderers. Indeed, experts on psychopathy have estimated that up to 25% of prison populations include people who could be labeled as psychopaths. However, people with psychopathic personalities are not exclusively found among criminals. In reality, they are often described as “charming” and quite normal, even functioning in high profile professions. There are three major patterns of qualities that characterize a psychopath: 1) interpersonal conduct such as dishonesty, narcissism, and arrogance, along with a marked lack of consideration for the rights and well-being of others 2) affective deficits such as lack of empathy or guilt, and 3) impulsiveness or risk-taking.

Egypt’s rulers to spell out powers of presidency on eve of vote to fill post. As the candidates enter the final stretch of campaigning, the still-undefined power structure has cast a pall on what could be the most consequential election in Egypt’s modern history. The Islamists who dominate the country’s newly elected parliament have voiced support for a system with a weaker presidency, setting up a potentially bruising fight between lawmakers and the new president.
“It’s really anybody’s guess how these powers are going to be enumerated,” said Steven A. Cook, a foreign policy expert at the Council on Foreign Relations who has studied Egypt’s democratic transition closely. “It’s going to be a struggle between a parliament that can claim a popular mandate and a president who will also claim a popular mandate.” Shortly after Mubarak’s ouster in February 2011, the military laid out a transition timetable that included drafting a revised constitution before a new president was sworn in. Recent democratic transitions in the region have been turbulent. Nato: What is it for? 19 May 2012Last updated at 22:54 ET Many Nato soldiers will leave Afghanistan next year - but where will they go next?
The main purpose of the latest Nato summit is to emphasise that the organisation's longest, biggest ever operation is nearly at an end. They will announce that next year will be a "milestone" when the lead combat role is handed over to Afghan forces. The purpose is to stress that for the West, the fighting will soon be over. But we aren't leaving. It is a delicate, difficult balance. Today the alliance is talking about more existential questions - why are we here? Freed from MAD It is a question Nato has been forced to ask before. When that empire crumbled, it cast around for a new role and found it in expansion and absorption of many of the old Warsaw Pact. But the end of the old Cold War stand off meant more. It did so in a limited way as the former Yugoslavia disintegrated. But in two years time Afghanistan will be over, and Nato will be looking for a role. Nurturing Nato. New York Gets The First Underground Park Of The Future. A few years ago, Dan Barasch and James Ramsey discovered an abandoned trolley terminal from 1903 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan—and they decided to build an underground park.
Called ‘Delancey Underground’ or ‘LowLine’ (as in an underground ‘The High Line’ park for the Lower East Side), the first underground park of New York will use a system of fiber optic cables to gather and transfer sunlight from above the ground, to the ceilings below the ground. The cables will help disperse, and support the growth and photosynthesis of plants and trees. According to Barasch and Ramsey, the light carried through the cables will have the necessary wavelengths to support photosynthesis—while blocking out harmful UV rays that cause sunburn. The Delancey Underground will be 60,000 square-feet (1.5 acres) large, and 20-feet high, and contain the strong steel columns from the terminal abandoned in 1948.
The Kickstarter fundraising for the project was a success, and a pre-test was launched. The Paleocene era would have been a terrible time to own a pet turtle, unless you had a garage to park it in. Paleontologists have discovered a car-sized turtle in a Colombian coalmine that may have eaten alligators and ruled a large swath of land and fresh water. After the Great Extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, reptiles continued to thrive, with some of them, like the 40-foot Titanoboa, growing to enormous sizes and dominating the post-apocalyptic epoch. This titanic turtle, dubbed Carbonemys cofrinii, was a Titanoba contemporary, at the size of a Fiat with a skull as big as a football.
And in an era where ancient crocs preyed on small turtles, this 6-foot shell-dweller flipped the predator and prey relationship. How did creatures like this get so big? Scientists think the lush, hot environment helped—as did a lack of predators. Video produced by Paca Thomas. One-Hundred Years of Color by COLOURlovers.
The month of June marks the 100th Anniversary of Colour Film being widely available in the form of specialised plated designed by the Lumiere brothers in Lyons, France. In the shadow of many unsuccessful attempts to accomplish colour in common hands, the Lumiere product, called Autochrome plates, were turned out of their factories in numbers barely ducking below six-thousand a day. This exhibition features a selection of these fragile images on glass. Included are examples that show how Autochromes were used to document the world -- capturing images of exotic cultures and places and scientific specimens.
There are color images depicting family life and leisure among both high society and the middle class. Happy 100th in Colour Film.
