Part workshop, part festival, it is organised in Bergen, Norway, and involves participants from more than a dozen countries exchanging ideas, coding, presenting art and software projects, doing workshops, performances and discussions on the aesthetics and politics of free and open source software. The development, and therefore use, of digital technology today is mainly controlled by multinational corporations. Despite the prospects of technology expanding the means of artistic expression, the commercial demands of the software industries severely limit them instead. Piksel is focusing on the open source movement as a strategy for regaining artistic control of the technology, but also a means to bring attention to the close connections between art, politics, technology and economy. Between 2009-2011 M.A.R.I.N.’s focus was to organize a series of camps, a nomadic residency and workshop program looking at marine environments, sustainable mobility, and various methods & technologies for field work. In 2009 we realized a 3-month residency and workshop programme at the Irish Sea, working in particular around Belfast, the Cumbrian coast and Liverpool. Operations were carried out from a 12-meter catamaran sail boat and working with partners in harbour cities. We used environmental sensors and existing data sets, integrating them with artistic projects. Participants were Andreas Siagian (HONF, IN), Nigel Helyer, Daniel Woo, Michael Lake (Audio Nomad, AU), Tapio Mäkelä (FI) with the main focus on research project Ecolocated – Littoral Lives. It strives to connect research practices, technologies, science, art and civil society. It engages in the development and popularisation of open culture, free licences and software, and in new ways of distribution. It detects how the communication transformations affect the society and encourages innovative art practices. From 2011 Ljudmila acts also as a public lead of Creative Commons Slovenia. Since 2011 Ljudmila develops and publishes the Culture.si portal for international cooperation, in 2013 the Kulturnik.si (metasearch engine and cultural news aggregator) was launched. En 2003, avec la participation de la fondation canadienne Daniel Langlois pour l’art, la science et les nouvelles technologies, l’association ouvre un espace public numérique, dans le but d’offrir des activités autres qu’une simple consommation – fascination d’Internet, diffusée par les nombreux cybers qui existent au Sénégal. Ker Thiossane axe ses activités autour des recherches sur l’art et les nouvelles technologies, et sur ce qu’elles impliquent dans nos sociétés, au cours de résidences, de formations, de rencontres et de workshop. En 2008 elle met en œuvre le premier festival Afropixel qui porte sur les logiciels libres en lien avec les pratiques citoyennes en Afrique et dans les pays du Sud.
Ker Thiossane cherche à développer les échanges et les collaborations avec des structures du continent africain mais aussi à tisser des liens avec d’autres continents, et en particulier avec des pays du Sud.
