A Generation of Change - Earthship Knowledge is Spreading

We attended a conference held in Toronto by Michael Reynolds and the Earthship Biotecture team and one thing became clear – we had to build one. Fast forward till last summer and finally Valhalla’s Farm of the Future Greenhouse came to life. Let’s just say we learnt a lot and as one of our Members Sandra eloquently explains in her article – 8 Lessons to Help You Prepare for your Earthship Build there is a lot to consider beyond just tires and south facing windows. What’s really interesting to me however is the explosion of this trend happening not only around the world but right here in Quebec. From Francis Gendron’s many Earthship conferences to – the exploding demand to come and take a tour on our land it seems this trend is here to stay. It seems like people are waking up – and everywhere I look people seem to be taking more action and looking to invest in change.

Our Story

At some point I watched the documentary film Garbage Warrior and got the Earthship bug. ..Two years ago I moved to Taos, New Mexico for their second-ever Earthship Biotecture Academy session. .One year ago I was finishing up an Earthship greenhouse that I designed and built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Today I write this from the dining room table inside my custom Earthship that I built in Santa Cruz, California. Stephanie and I left Wisconsin in late March 2013 after having spent the winter building the 300 sq. ft. greenhouse pictured at right.

We started in LA, then San Diego. The short version of the arrival story is this: through a fairly vague connection, we linked up with a property owner that just happened to be in the somewhat early stages of creating an intentional community. In fact, TreeHugger has featured countless posts on "earthships"—self-sufficient passive solar homes built from old tires, cans, mud and concrete. From Justin's introduction to the earthship concept, via Kristin's post on the first earthship in Nicaragua, to Lloyd's coverage of earthships landing in Britain, these low-impact dwellings have spread far and wide from their birth-place in New Mexico. But how do you actually build one? Via the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, I've just come across this great slideshow showing a step-by-step progression through the building of an earthship in Normandy, France. (It looks like it might be the same building that I wrote about when I posted on the Earthship Normandy project.)

It truly lived up to its name, and it was indeed a greenhouse made up of Earthship elements, but more importantly, IT WAS INSPIRING. So many problems seem to plaguing our world, and yet the solutions remain exceedingly simple. What I learned transcends anything that could have been taught in a classroom, or through a book. This lesson was experienced. These are clips from the 10 videos made during the greenhouse build. Sustainable Construction - a holistic view. Earthship. Build a house out of tires and dirt! Earthships - Evolutions. It all started in the late sixties begin seventies of last century.

Earthships - Evolutions

A young architect Michael Reynolds was concerned with all the waste being produced and the ongoing oil crisis of those days. He first started experimenting building with cans. He later added tires rammed with earth as a new building block. This technique was not new since there are pictures of these kind of walls built by farmers in the US dating back to 19351. Thermal mass and passive solar housing was a movement that was ongoing in the USA of the seventies, and still is. Birth of the earthship Combining all these techniques and adding water catchment and energy production slowly led to the earthship we now know. This gradualy moved on to U-shaped and combinations of both. Another model was the packaged model. Combining the ideas of the modular models with greenhouse with the packaged model without a greenhouse led to the birth of the Global model. Grand Designs - Earthship - Brittany Groundhouse. Attlevadetlevandelivet.
