Sound Design Videos. Game Audio. Sound Designer. Sound Design. Sound Designers. Ric Viers on Location Sound Mixing | Colin Hart's Sound Bistro. The new an improved, tanner, Ric Viers Ric Viers: he is a sound effects recordist extraordinaire, an author, a business owner, a husband, a father, a friend, and the owner of one sweet soul patch. Even better, he has kindly done an interview with me for the blog. Ric has a new book coming out next year that deals with production sound (which he can’t share details on yet), but I thought I’d get a head start and interview him about his production audio experience.

There aren’t very many production audio resources out there, so his book will be filling a huge void. Ric is the owner of Blastwave FX, a sound effects company, The Detroit Chop Shop, a post production house in Michigan, and author of The Sound Effects Bible, a great publication about recording, editing and mastering sound effects. CH: You got your start in sound doing production audio for shorts and independent films, correct? RV: Yeah, I got started doing location sound. RV: Correct. RV: Actually we used NTG3 shotguns. Principles of Boom Operation. I wrote this article a few years ago for my old blog.

I got a TON of great responses from it, so I thought I would resurrect it again, especially since I just shot a new microphone placement video (seen at the bottom of this page). I’ve made some updates and edits to the article as well. Quick disclaimer on this article: There are many different boom operation techniques. While some are better than others, there is no one way that trumps the others. Enjoy! Let’s talk cinema style audio for a bit. Once we start talking ENG, the mixer not only mixes, but does everything the boom op does. Now, you could be the most personable person in the world, not stepping on anyone’s toes and getting all the work you need to get done finished without negatively altering anyone’s mood, and still be a terrible boom op.

A boom op needs to realize how incredibly sensitive his gear is. As a boom operator, you have to be willing to do crazy things to get that perfect sound. Think about it. Sound Library. Sound Libraries. Boom Library. The Sound of Planetside 2. Written by Gary Miranda & Rodney Gates (edited by George Hufnagl) PlanetSide 2 was a fun, creative, and challenging game to make. In a very short amount of time (~18 months), it went from pretty much scratch to what it is now, with a lot of new technology created for the project and our ever-growing, proprietary game engine.

Below we’ll list out some of the highlights along the way. PlanetSide 2 almost wasn’t the game it is today. It was supposed to be a slightly-revised, graphics-upscaled version of regular old PlanetSide, simply called PlanetSide “Next.” However, once a new production team and creative leads were added to the title, it quickly went an entirely new direction, pushing the technology and boundaries of our capability beyond what we thought we could accomplish.

Rodney had started working on the older version, PlanetSide “Next,” towards the tail end of the development of our previous title, Clone Wars Adventures. Gary got in around November 2011. Ask most gamers to name their favourite memory of Red Dead Redemption, and the chances are their eyes will mist over a little and they’ll describe crossing the border into Mexico for the first time. Red Dead’s open, Western setting is beautiful in itself, and crossing the river from the fictional state of New Austin into the harsher, reddened landscape of Nuevo Paraiso is indeed a visually impressive moment. But what is it that makes this resonate so strongly in gamers’ minds? It’s that as you mount your horse, and set out into the new country, a piece of music starts to play.

Not unremarkable in itself – music is as big a part of games as it is films. So what is it about this particular piece of music, the lilting song Far Away by Jose Gonzalez, that enhances the experience so much? The song itself is non-diegetic – that is, it does not “exist” in the “game world”, but is artificially laid on top of that world. Another non-diegetic song can be found in Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3.

Burn! Pro Tools Automatix. ProTools: Bounce to Quicktime Movie with Full Options | Randy Coppinger. Apparently this has been one of the best kept secrets among post production ProTools users: before you execute a “Bounce to” > “QuickTime Movie…” command, hold down Control-Option-Command. You will get a different dialog box that includes an “Options…” button. Click Options and you can manipulate a wide variety of QuickTime specifications for a video file: video codec, frame rate, dimensions; audio format, sample rate, bits, channel configuration; and file streaming optimization.

If you work to picture and need to kick out a different format, this can save you having to work in another application. As of ProTools 7.2 you’ve been able to do this trick. And apparently it’s been documented on the duc since at least 2006. I’ve never seen this key combo in any official documentation. Well now you know.
