Criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitism. Against Amnesia: The Cultural Boycott of Israel Matters. Brooklyn Bridge, 2014 (all images provided by MTL Collective) Editor’s Note: The following article, written by Amin Husain, Nicholas Mirzoeff, and Nitasha Dhillon as MTL Collective, is a response to the “Report on the Cultural Boycott of Israel,” which we published last week.
This is the second in a continuing series exploring BDS and its connection to the art world. We write today from a place of love, as well as hurt, for an art world to which we in part belong. We write for and with our community of friends, colleagues, and mentors — as a Palestinian artist and activist, a British-Jewish Asian professor, and an Indian artist and PhD student, who have been actively involved in two widely reported cultural boycotts. It feels to us as if we have traveled back in time to a moment before the most recent Gaza war and before #BlackLivesMatter. In this gloomy twilight, it feels as if we are marooned in a sea of hatred, killing, and sadness. Manhattan Bridge, 2014 February 3, 2015. Free Ebook on Palestine. As threats to Jews said to mount in Europe, Israeli minister gets “excited” In a year-end joint media release, Israel’s Government Press Office and the Jewish Agency trumpet that “aliyah” has hit a “ten-year high.”
According to the emailed release, more than 26,500 Jews moved to Israel in 2014, up about a third from the previous year. The surge represented a huge increase in “the number of Jews who reached the conclusion that they have no other country,” according to Sofa Landver, minister of “aliyah and immigrant absorption.” “Aliyah” is the term Israel uses for when Jews emigrate to historic Palestine (Israel and the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip) under the racist “Law of Return” which benefits only Jews and excludes indigenous Palestinians displaced in and since 1948 from returning home.
“I am excited to see the fruits of our many efforts to encourage aliyah, but we have not yet reached our goal,” the Russian-born Landver adds. Why are they coming? Weapons of mass distraction - OpinionIsrael News - Haaretz Israeli News source. Photo-Book: Occupied Palestine Through My Lens… To the family of the one thousandth victim of Israel's genocidal slaughter in Gaza. I do not know yet who your loved one was.
She might have been a baby a few months old, or a young boy, a grandfather or one of your children or parents. I heard about your loved one’s death from Chico Menashe, a political commentator on Reshet Bet, Israel’s main radio station. He explained that the killing of your loved one, as well as turning Gaza neighborhoods to rubble and driving 150,000 people from their homes, is part of a well-calculated Israeli strategy: this carnage will destroy the impulse of Palestinians in Gaza to resist Israeli policies. Revealed: Gaza orphans Israel trip was government-backed PR stunt.
An Israeli initiative to exploit a group of Palestinian orphans from Gaza to burnish Israel’s blood-soaked image backfired on Sunday when Hamas, the Palestinian political and military resistance movement, put a stop to it.
A group of children whose parents were killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza last summer and several adult chaperones were about to pass through the Erez crossing into Israel on Sunday to be greeted by Israeli officials and a media throng. But Hamas officials halted the visit. According to a statement posted on Facebook by the interior ministry in Gaza, security services stopped “37 children of martyrs from departing to the lands occupied in 1948 [Israel] for a suspicious visit to several settlements and occupied cities.”
It said the step was taken “to protect the culture of our children and our people and protect them from the policy of normalization.” But it appears the children – though they were the props – were not the target. 6 Reasons 'Pinkwashing' Israel on Gay Rights Is So Wrong. Jerusalem: Don't call it a religious conflict. They are horrifying images of a house of prayer drenched in blood.
That an ultra-orthodox synagogue in West Jerusalem was chosen for this latest, gruesome attack, in which four Jewish-Israeli men were killed by two knife-wielding Palestinians, has detonated appalling historic associations and has been widely condemned. This attack has also, inevitably, sparked descriptions of a "religious war" in the region - depicted in media headlines as being in various stages of development: either a current reality or an unavoidably impending one. Those who insist on stressing the religious dimension are bolstered by the reaction from Hamas to this attack, as the Islamist group has, with bleak predictability, praised and celebrated it. And once again the media framing designates the starting point - and therefore, implicitly, the causes - of the current bloodshed between Israelis and Palestinians. The Israeli government has repeatedly blamed the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas. Writing History: "The Pen Is Dipped In Palestinian Blood"

Helpful Hints for Zionists: How to Advocate for Israel without Being Antisemitic « Meldungen aus dem Exil. In recent years, the Palestinian solidarity movement has made great progress towards ridding itself of the assorted antisemites and racists who had sought to exploit the Palestinian struggle for their own bigoted ends.
Alas, whilst the Palestinian solidarity movement has been making these strides, it is hard not to notice that Israel’s apologists are scarcely willing to acknowledge that they have an antisemitism problem, let alone do anything about it. Because I know how daunting it can be to confront an issue like this, I would like to offer Israel’s supporters the following helpful hints on how to support Israel without being antisemitic. Here are just a few examples of the terms Israel’s apologists should avoid if they do not want to subject themselves to the accusation of antisemitism. Gateway. The Jury reported: 'The cumulative effect of the long-standing regime of collective punishment in Gaza appears to inflict conditions of life calculated to bring about the incremental destruction of the Palestinians as a group in Gaza.' The Jury heard evidence from eyewitnesses to Israeli attacks during the Gaza war 2014 including journalists Mohammed Omer, Max Blumenthal, David Sheen, Martin Lejeune, Eran Efrati and Paul Mason, as well as surgeons Mads Gilbert, Mohammed Abou Arab, Genocide Expert Paul Behrens, Col Desmond Travers and Ivan Karakashian, Head of Advocacy and Defence for Children International. Gaza's children paint a grim future. In the wake of Operation Protective Edge, Israel’s latest onslaught on the Gaza Strip, I acquired a series of photographs of drawings by children in the town of Khuza’a in southern Gaza.
Khuza’a had played unwilling host to one of the Israeli army’s many attempts to outdo itself in terms of brutality, with success measurable, perhaps, in the amount of rubble and massacred bodies left behind. The photographs were passed along to me by the Barcelona-based psychoanalyst Lluis Isern, whose colleague in Gaza had sent them to him. Everyone Of Us Is A Palestinian. The Man Who Wants To Smash My Face With A Baseball Bat. Michael – you are a fucking idiot and I’d love to smash your face with a baseball bat. Self-hating Jew, you are worse than the terrorists themselves. - Jarryd Rubinstein I’m pretty used to people disagreeing with me about Israel. I first got into angry arguments about Israel in high school. The anger in those arguments came from people furious that I didn’t accept official dogmas about Israel.
But even at Moriah – the Jewish school I went for all 13 of my schooling years – there were always people who didn’t want arguments to go too far. When a tall boy pushed me around, another boy stood up for me. The tall boy wound up apologising to me, because he thought he’d gone too far. There were other occasions where I was called an Arab, where people expressed disgust at my views.
It was disheartening and awful to be surrounded by such a chauvinistic atmosphere, but even so, it was within certain limits, which everyone seemed to understand. I responded with laughter. A traditional Jewish response to this would be: "He who destroys a human life is as if he had destroyed the whole world. " My own rabbi said a few weeks ago in this forum he was "done apologizing" for Israel, in a view that seemed to articulate the position of what is sometimes called "the organized Jewish community.
