To outsource or not to outsource, that was the question. While it still is an unpopular action for corporations to take, most large companies – and increasingly small-to-midsize firms – outsource work at some point or another. And for good reason: financially -- IT shops that outsource infrastructure management and application services can expect to save 12% to 17% annually on average, which means U.S. companies are sitting on about $10 billion in potential savings, according to a recent Forrester Research report

Strategy - Unilever HR deal will not spark rush to outsource - 13/06/2006

http://www.personneltoday.com/articles/2006/06/13/35839/unilever-hr-deal-will-not-spark-rush-to-outsource.html Unilever’s large-scale HR outsourcing deal with Accenture will not signal a rush by other companies towards signing similar contracts, experts predict. Last week, the consumer goods giant signed a seven-year deal with Accenture covering about 200,000 staff in 100 countries. The HR services to be provided include recruitment, payroll and core HR administration. The full value of the contract has not been revealed, but it is thought to be considerably larger than Accenture’s HR deal with BT signed last year, which is worth £306m over 10 years. The move by Unilever –owner of brands including Persil, Flora and Lynx – follows decisions by other large organisations to fully outsource their HR functions, including BAE Systems, Cable & Wireless and BT. Figures from researchers Yankee Group indicated that global HR business process outsourcing is expected to grow to £42.8bn by 2008.

Staff motivation 'should be top priority for businesses' | Chartered Management Institute

Following the autumn statement from the chancellor many businesses will begin focusing on their bottom line and how to improve financial performance, but one expert has claimed staff motivation should be top of the agenda. Andy Philpott, sales and marketing director at Edenred, said that businesses need to use management skills to look for small savings that can make a big difference to employees' finances and morale. As inflation hits five per cent and there are crippling increases in fuel and utility prices, employee savings benefits can help by giving staff a way to make their money go further with discounts on everything from food and drink to travel, motoring and finance as well as cash-back offers. http://www.managers.org.uk/news/staff-motivation-should-be-top-priority-businesses

Ask the Experts: How can I keep my team motivated? | Chartered Management Institute

In times of uncertainty, the psychological contract between you and your employees – what they believe they owe the organisation and vice versa – is broken. Employees will feel insecure, act more conservatively and be less engaged as a result. They tend to be highly compliant but not necessarily accepting of the demands you make. As a manager, you will know the signs. You need to acknowledge your situation and the problems and limitations it poses. Understanding your staff and what motivates them is more important than ever – you need to focus on your communications strategy and how you word things.

Business Resources: Case Studies–Writing a Case Study Analysis

Often, as part of your course requirements, you will need to present your instructor with a written case analysis. This may be an individual or a group report. Whatever the situation, there are certain guidelines to follow in writing a case analysis that will improve the evaluation your work will receive from your instructor. Before we discuss these guidelines and before you use them, make sure that they do not conflict with any directions your instructor has given you.

What is a case study analysis in the context of a business course? ‘A case study is an account of an activity, event or problem that contains a real or hypothetical situation and includes the complexities you would encounter in the workplace’ (Mort, Cross & Downey 2002). Case studies are usually written as a narrative i.e. like a story, using the contexts of real life organisations.

Business Resources: Case Studies–Analyzing a Case Study

As just mentioned, the purpose of the case study is to let you apply the concepts you've learned when you analyze the issues facing a specific company. To analyze a case study, therefore, you must examine closely the issues with which the company is confronted. Most often you will need to read the case several times - once to grasp the overall picture of what is happening to the company and then several times more to discover and grasp the specific problems. To analyze a case, you need to apply what you've learned to each of these areas.
