It’s a small thing, but to you, it’s the most important one: You need to craft a persuasive bio that people read and click on. A bio that will drive swarms of readers to your homepage, and boost your traffic and email list.

Without a great bio, much of your guest posting effort will go to waste. So how to write a bio for maximum effect? What are the indispensible parts? Should the tone connect emotionally or be prosaic? Make the character exceptional at something. Give your character a trait or skill that makes him or her admirable in some way. It doesn’t have to be anything over-the-top.

Maybe she’s an office manager…who is an amazing cook. Maybe he’s a rebellious teenager…who is unusually perceptive. As soon as that character is really good at something, the reader perks up. The reader gets interested. 2. This is so effective that screenwriters often use a “save the cat” scene (and the better the screenwriter, the subtler the scene) near the beginning of the screenplay to make the audience like and identify with the character.

As soon as you show the character genuinely caring about the world, the reader starts to care. 3. Hands-down, one of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever received in my life. 4. Age no excuse for failing to learn a new language - life - 22 July 2011. IT'S never too late to learn another language. Surprisingly, under controlled conditions adults turn out to be better than children at acquiring a new language skill. It is widely believed that children younger than 7 are good at picking up new languages because their brains rewire themselves more easily, and because they use what is called procedural, or implicit, memory to learn - meaning they pick up a new language without giving it conscious thought.

Adults are thought to rely on explicit memory, whereby they actively learn the rules of a language. But some linguists now question whether this apparent difference in language-learning ability reflects our attitudes to young children and adults rather than differences in the brain. Ferman and Avi Karni from the University of Haifa, Israel, devised an experiment in which 8-year-olds, 12-year-olds and adults were given the chance to learn a new language rule.

"The adults were consistently better in everything we measured," says Ferman. 7 Steps That Will Hook Readers On Your Content through the Magnetic Force of Fascination. An alternate title for this post might be, “Things I Think About Writing,” which is to say, these are random snidbits (snippets + tidbits) of beliefs I hold about what it takes to be a writer.

I hesitate to say that any of this is exactly Zen (oh how often we as a culture misuse the term “Zen” — like, “Whoa, that tapestry is so cool, it’s really Zen“), but it certainly favors a sharper, shorter style than the blathering wordsplosions I tend to rely on in my day-to-day writing posts. Anyway. Peruse these. Absorb them into your body. Let your colonic flora digest them and feed them through your bloodstream to the little goblin-man that pilots you. I know some writers could careless about word count, but these days it’s important. Well, I guess it has always been important. For me, I write shorts or novella’s as they are called. I have ghostwritten some novels, but I don’t write them per-say until now. I love writing, but I don’t know if novella’s are just my niche or I haven’t applied myself to write more. I am going to give you a list that I found online for word counts. Literary / Commercial / Women’s: 80,000 to 110,000 – These genres vary greatly in how their stories are told, but not in how many words are used to tell them.

So, these are the numbers that writers are suppose to follow if you want to be picked up by a mainstream publisher. Short Stories: 1000 to 8,000 – Many contests will advise on their own maximum word count, sometimes as high as 20K. Like this: Like Loading... Related A to Z Challenge H is for Help! I need help!
