Printable 2011 Calendar. The Myth of Charter Schools by Diane Ravitch. Waiting for “Superman” a film directed by Davis Guggenheim Ordinarily, documentaries about education attract little attention, and seldom, if ever, reach neighborhood movie theaters. Davis Guggenheim’s Waiting for “Superman” is different. It arrived in late September with the biggest publicity splash I have ever seen for a documentary.

Two other films expounding the same arguments—The Lottery and The Cartel—were released in the late spring, but they received far less attention than Guggenheim’s film. The message of these films has become alarmingly familiar: American public education is a failed enterprise. The Cartel maintains that we must not only create more charter schools, but provide vouchers so that children can flee incompetent public schools and attend private schools. For many people, these arguments require a willing suspension of disbelief.

Waiting for “Superman” and the other films appeal to a broad apprehension that the nation is falling behind in global competition. Why People Don't Use Mass Transit. Steven Dutch, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay First-time Visitors: Please visit Site Map and Disclaimer. Use "Back" to return here. Thought Experiment One day in 1974 or so, I was sitting in my car (actually my thesis adviser's university car) inching across the George Washington Bridge on my way to Manhattan to meet a class where I was the teaching assistant. Suddenly I asked myself "Why am I doing this? " Since I have never, in the 30 years since, seen any article by advocates of mass transit - not one - that bothered to ask why people don't take mass transit despite all its supposed advantages, I thought it might be useful to explain why people prefer to drive instead of take the bus.

After this page was linked by another site, I got a number of responses that suggested a bit of clarification is in order. The Value of Time Nowhere is this issue clearer than in attempts to deal with the problems caused by the automobile. I live eight miles from campus. Baltimore's Head of School Lunches Is Transforming the City's Program - washingtonpost.com.

Never mind that a thin stream of water is leaking through a crack in the greenhouse roof. Or that most of the class of 5-year-olds who were brought in to see the plants didn't much like the samples of radish and mustard greens they tasted. It will take a lot more than that to dim Tony Geraci's enthusiasm for his latest project, the 33-acre Great Kids Farm, tucked behind strip malls and fast-food joints in Catonsville, Md. Just some asbestos removal here and some bathroom renovations there, and "this will be an alternative school that teaches the idea and premises of sustainability," Geraci explained as he bounced through the aqua-walled main building. The new food service director for Baltimore City Public Schools has grand plans: The farm, which began welcoming students this past winter, will serve as an incubator for school gardens throughout the city.

If Geraci were a character on "The Wire," he would be heroic, and he would fail. Teachers are enthusiastic about the farm. Top 25 SNES games | Article.
