On-the-Spot Scaffolding for Students

Being able to respond to learners' needs on the spot is hands down one of the greatest tricks of this trade. And when lesson planning, we can't always guess how many steps we will need to break a lesson into and how much support will be needed for each chunk. I know I've made assumptions about what students will "get" and then in the middle of the lesson, I've had to stop, think on my feet, and add something to help move the learning forward. Just to be clear: Scaffolding a lesson and differentiating instruction are two different things. Scaffolding is breaking up the learning into chunks and then providing a tool, or structure, with each chunk. 3 Scaffolding Strategies On-the-spot scaffolding and differentiating are essential skills for teachers.

The challenge, however, rests in making differentiation manageable. While few teachers doubt the importance of differentiating, many struggle to make customized learning spaces a reality. In this February 2012 Alaska Staff Development Network webinar, sixth grade classroom teacher, blogger and educational technology author Bill Ferriter will introduce participants to a range of digital tools that can be used to (1). provide structure for differentiated classrooms and (2). differentiate learning experiences by student interest.

Though the Performance Learning Center environment itself can be considered DIFFERENTIATION from the traditional classroom setting, self-paced, computer-based instruction is but a single aspect of student learning. Our students come to us with a variety of personal, social, and academic backgrounds and though ALL are seeking the prize of a high school diploma, EACH has unique needs, skills, talents, and interests to which we must be sensitive. How? It may seem impossible to imagine DIFFERENTIATING a learning management system such as education2020, Apex Learning, PLATO, or NovaNET, but each of these has features that enable flexibility.
