Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 Review

And although the camera bears the '1' appendage in its model name, it is clear from even a cursory glance that with the GX1, Panasonic has provided the long-awaited spiritual successor to the highly regarded Lumix DMC-GF1. Of perhaps even greater significance, the move to introduce a separate GX product line (as opposed to releasing the camera as a 'GF4') would seem to suggest a long-term commitment by the camera maker to meet the demands of enthusiasts who embraced the GF1.

Launched back in 2009, the GF1 was, ironically, Panasonic's attempt to court compact-camera owners looking to upgrade, with what was then billed as, 'the world's smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera'. Instead, the GF1's high quality Raw output and classic rangefinder aesthetic gained a strong and passionate following in the enthusiast market. Panasonic GX1 First Impressions. And Two New X Lenses Before I begin my report on the new Panasonic GX1, please allow me a brief digression.

We now have the Canon 1DX, Samsung NX200, Fujifilm X-10, Ricoh GXR, Casio EX15, Olympus XZ1, Sigma DP2X, Sony HX9V – and that's with just one model from each company, and only since January. Full Frame Shootout: Review of Nikon D800, D4 and Canon 5DmkIII

For the readers of my blog. I was not paid by any manufacturer to do this. The two Nikons were supplied to me on loan as review cameras by Nikon UK for this review. I have never and will never be paid by a manufacturer to review a product. My opinions are my own and always will be. My BAFTA/ RAINDANCE winning documentary “How to start a revolution” is available to buy on Amazon. The Nikon D800. The first full frame full HD DSLR to challenge the dominance of the Canon 5DmkII? Full frame…kind of magical words for many, including me.

The Nikon D800. The first full frame full HD DSLR to challenge the dominance of the Canon 5DmkII?

Since the Canon 5DmkII came out all the way back in November 2008, not one full frame DSLR that shoots full HD video has come out. Countless crop sensor cameras, but no full frame ones. Quite a while back we had Canon announce their top end 1DX which is due for release next month, I have not seen one yet so no I’ve idea what it actually is like. Then last month we had the D4 announced by Nikon, shipping relatively soon. Neither of these is what you would call cheap in DSLR terms.

Nikon D800 Review. Review based on production Nikon D800 and D800E cameras running firmware v1.00 June 2012: This review has been significantly expanded to include detailed analysis of the performance of the D800 alongside its closely-related stablemate the D800E.

Nikon D800 Review

We have also added samples and analysis of the D800/E's uncompressed video feature. Except where specifically noted, any comments in the body of this review which reference the 'Nikon D800' actually refer to both models. When the Nikon D800 and D800E were announced, the specification that got everyone's attention was - and to a large degree still is - the massive pixel count of their 36.3MP CMOS sensor.

When a moderately-sized full-frame DSLR body aspires to go toe-to-toe with medium format cameras and backs at a fraction of their price, other attributes can seem secondary. Panasonic Lumix GF1. I've never been a fan of the Four Thirds format.

Panasonic Lumix GF1

When it first was introduced I complained on these pages that it was a step in the wrong direction. We needed larger sensors, not smaller ones. The raison d'etre for 4/3 was to make cameras smaller, and though the first models were somewhat smaller than their 1.5X and 1.6X competitors, it wasn't long before Canon, Nikon and others started producing DSLRs that challenged what Olympus (primarily) was trying to do with the new format.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 Field Test — 16 Days in the Himalayas. The GF1 is a near perfect travel camera.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 Field Test — 16 Days in the Himalayas

For 16 days I lived with it strapped to me as I climbed through the valleys of central Nepal up to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,200 meters. I covered the camera in sweat. I hit it against rocks (unintentionally). The air was often dusty and this dust, by the end of the trip, had worked its way into every nook of the GF1. And yet it performed flawlessly. The compact combination of Panasonic's GF1 body and the 20mm f1.7 Lumix pancake lens works with you as a traveler.
