RESEARCH 2

Since 1997, the Red Saunders Research Foundation has been dedicated to increasing our knowledge of the musicians who filled the clubs and recording studios of Chicago with great music during the two decades after World War II. Some musicians from Chicago were appreciated by the fans early on, like Gene Ammons and Johnny Griffin—yet their full worth only gradually become apparent to jazz critics over the years. Others were not widely appreciated until much later in their careers, like John Gilmore, Clifford Jordan, Norman Simmons, or Muhal Richard Abrams. Far too many others have been forgotten. There are two reasons for this neglect of Chicago musicians from the postwar period: One is that most jazz writing has focused on New York or on the West Coast.

I was looking for a good representation of Sun Ra under the form of a documentary or movie so I checked this video out.. Sun Ra is known now for his free music, an evolution from a more 50s stylistic bebop to more explorative free forms since the early 60s (using psychedelic echo effects already in 1961, making these early albums sound a bit like psychedelia in the “real” form of what that means, much more than to (stylistic) jazz), and then also big band free jazz explorations (since the early 70s), all with cosmo-mystic themes and associations. I did a Radioshow once at the time when his many (!) http://www.psychemusic.org/sunra.html

Sun Ra on the myth of "Freedom" - Breaking Open The Head

The following is a lengthy transcript of a lecture Sun Ra gave in 1979. I have a partial audio recording of the 70 minute lecture unfortunately my copy cuts at 58 minutes, but I posted some good moments below. The topics covered are uncannily appropriate to alot of what has come up on this message board in the past couple of seasons. Sun Ra speaking in 1979: I’m talking about equations. For a long time, the world has dwelt on faith, beliefs, Possibly dreams. http://www.breakingopenthehead.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2222
Have you ever wondered what the Sun would sound like if you could hear it? Our Sun lies 93,000,000 miles away, surrounded by the vacuum of space. Sound won't travel through space, of course. But with the right instrument, scientists can "hear" pulsations from the Sun. http://solar-center.stanford.edu/singing/
