The Man Who Discovered Prince

His manager Owen Husney pictured far right. Last month I talked to Prince’s first manager, Owen Husney. He was the man that discovered Prince when he was just a teenager living in a basement in Minneapolis, the man who brokered Prince’s first record deal, and who helped him assemble the players in his band. Husney was there during the lengthy recording of Prince’s debut album For You, standing behind him when the headstrong 18-year-old told the label he wanted to be the sole producer, despite his lack of experience.

Prince played everything on For You—including finger cymbals—and last month the album finally had its vinyl reissue, which is the reason I called. By the time Owen Husney met Prince Rogers Nelson in the mid-70s, he was well placed to steer the young prodigy’s career. “We had the groupies, we had the small bus, we didn't have billions, but, you know, it was a pretty crazy life,” he explains. So what was the next step? Ha! Wow. Prince - 2000-11-11 - Philadelphia, PA (Full Concert) PRINCE - INTERVIEWS. Prince interview mel b 1998 paisley park.

Now, the Minneapolis artist is joining other top-tier rock stars by announcing a deal to write his memoir. The book will be published in 2017 by Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of Random House. He announced the book deal at a raucous pop-up performance Friday night at a nightclub in New York City. Prince (@prince) Electric Fetus - AdvancedSearch. Prince Tramps New York, NY Sep 26, 1998. Prince’s untimely death was a shock and a tragedy. Perhaps the one small consolation that can be taken from this sad event, was how it highlighted the deep love, respect and affection for the man and his work that was felt around the world. But it also highlighted just how hard it is to listen to his music. A lot is available to stream on TIDAL — but far from all of it. Even if you wanted to buy Prince’s music from a service like iTunes, on CD or Vinyl, much of his authorised catalogue is currently completely unavailable.

If you are a typical contemporary music buyer you get your music online, and second-hand CDs or records are amusing anachronisms, but essentially unusable. So to make clear just what we’re missing, here’s my list of the Top 10 Official Prince releases, which, right now, you simply can’t get hold of on the high street or online. 1. Every musician worth their salt has a handful of decent obscurities — an early LP under a different name, a great cover version, or some live recording from 70s LA by Mike Millard. These are cherished by the cognoscenti, delightful to the initiate and somewhat bewildering to the average listener. Baby Go-Go by Nona Hendryx. Purple Rain - Tom Jones & David Gilmour.
