Autistic children have much more nerve cells, a study | Healthy Living. Researchers have found that autistic children have much more nerve cells than children without autism in a part of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex which is involved in processing social skills. AutismAutism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
These signs all begin before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood. Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child’s life. Brain cellsBrain cells are electrically excitable cells that process and transmit information by electrical and chemical signaling. There are about 100 billion neurons in the brain. There are many types of neurons, varying in size from 4 microns (.004 mm) to 100 microns (.1 mm) in diameter. A new study has found that excess of brain...

I think that there are two major worries in my life when it comes to the boys, besides the everyday ones of course. I fear that once hubby and I are gone, there will be no one in the world who will love them. Love means more than just a relationship and a spouse (which is something that I hope and pray that they find. The other worry I have, which is always more immediate and right in front of you on a daily basis, is that there are those who still will not listen to them and give them the respect they deserve because of their disability.
Until next time, Elise. C. S. Wyatt's "Autism and Higher Education Rights" Scottish Autism « Mimanifesto – Jaye’s weblog. We had a lovely chat with the ladies from Scottish Autism ( used to be the Scottish Autistic Society, I think) yesterday afternoon in the showroom :-) They talked about their plans for the future and the services they provide to people on the Autistic spectrum and their families and friends, and the tough times ahead for all charity service providers and agencies, as well as the struggle to raise awareness and fundraise for what is sometimes a really hidden condition. Now its easy to understand the devastation this lifelong condition can have on people and families. Those affected often look no different from anybody else on the streets of our towns and cities, but when you know a little more about Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Aspergers Syndrome, you start to realise just how it impacts on everybody connected to the person affected.
Most often, care is provided by these families with little or no outside help and little or no funding ! - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad Like this: Autismsupporttelesummit. AUTISM by Edward Byrne. Taking your son/daughter with an autism spectrum disorder to the dentist. Taking your son/daughter on the autism spectrum to the dentist poses many challenges. This article hopes to make you aware of some of these challenges prior to your first visit, as well as provide some useful ways to deal with them. Included in this article are three main areas that are most often in need of attention:preparation, sensory issues and communication. Preparation When seeking a dentist, call the office and discuss your son/daughter’s needs. The more you know ahead of time about their practices and why they do them, the more comfortable you will be.
Ask if they have experience with children who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and if they have special procedures in order to optimize each visit. Ask about those procedures. Is your son/daughter accustomed to daily tooth brushing? Use their toothbrush or a plastic tooth mirror (available at local pharmacies) and get your child use to letting you put it in his/her mouth. Disability. Autism Support Network | Free autism & Aspergers support. Faulty testosterone cycle may explain male autism bias - health - 17 February 2011. More men than women have autism – now we may know why. Sex hormones regulate a gene linked with the condition, making it more likely that males will accumulate testosterone in the dangerous amounts that are thought to lead to autism. For every female that has autism there are four males. To better understand this sex bias, Valerie Hu at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington DC and colleagues studied a gene implicated in autism called retinoic acid-related orphan receptor-alpha (RORA). This gene controls a molecule that switches many subsequent genes on and off. Previous research has shown that RORA is important for development of the cerebellum and that the brains of people with autism expressed less of it than normal.
Hormone bath The team also discovered that RORA regulates another gene which controls aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to oestrogen. Elevated levels of testosterone in the womb are thought to contribute to the development of autism. Are Politicians Deaf to the Sick and Disabled? So, it's welfare reform on the agenda today. Iain Duncan-Smith will address the Select Committee this morning on Universal Credit and Liam Byrne, Labour's new Shadow Dept of Work and Pensions minister will outline Labour's position How Labour came to this position is a mystery. Certainly to any of us campaigning for an overhaul of Employment Support Allowance (ESA), radical changes to the assessment processes, and a new consultation on the proposals to abolish Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and replace it with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) whilst cutting numbers by at least 20%. Mr Byrne has been in the job for exactly 20 days.
I've been seriously ill for 27 years. Mr Byrne will state that no other pace of reform but the very fastest will do. The first thing I want to say is THIS IS NOT LABOUR'S POSITION. The second thing is WHO DO LABOUR ENGAGE WITH? I discussed ESA with Jonathan Shaw - the then Labour Minister for Disabilities for half an hour at conference once. Autism Eye | Home | Autism. Landmark victory for local autism services - NAS. Two sides to every story – a dilemna. I have a dilemna due to using a Creative Commons (CC) licence on one of my photographs (see above). The photo is part of a project that I did in 2006 for the flickr UTATA group which aimed to tells the positives and negatives of having aspergers syndrome to increase awareness of the realities and dispell some of the myths surrounding the autistic spectrum.
It was called ‘Two sides to every story‘. Some of you will already know that on flickr I am called Norma Desmond, so if people follow the my CC attricution, non commercial licence then they should credit the photo to Norma Desmond… I have stated on my photography website that I use my photography to promote positive aspects of autism and to raise awareness and I do link to the UTATA story and a youtube video on there. I have always responded positively when people have approached me to use these – either for an academic paper, conference presentation or blog post. So I eagerly clicked on the video to see how it had been used. In hindsight. I hope that this post may provide a useful summary of things for parents and carers of newly diagnosed children on the autistic spectrum. Don’t ignore the early signs… What may seem quirky or easily managable when they are little (such as lining up toys, humming or making repetative movements) are important signals that the child is attempting to control their responses to an environment or situation that may be causing them considerable stress.
I made the mistake of suspecting from the age of 2 or 3 that he may have aspergers syndrome and thinking that I didn’t need any help. Maybe I didn’t but I think, in hindsight, that my son could have benefitted from an earlier diagnosis (not done until aged 9 and after a terribly stressful and painful time). I also would have made different choices about several things – like moving across the country and taking on a very challenging job which involved alot of travel. Every child on the spectrum is unique Why nobody understands? Listen to your child. 'Cage' for autistic Nicolson Institute pupil removed. 1 November 2010Last updated at 16:14 The enclosure has been removed by the council An enclosed play area for a teenage pupil with learning difficulties and autism, which was described as a "cage" by his MSP, has been removed. The 18-year-old's parents raised funds for a safe play area at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, on Lewis.
However, SNP MSP Alasdair Allan said they were "deeply upset" to see what had been constructed. Western Isles Council - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - said it wanted to apologise unreservedly to the family. Norman MacDonald, vice chairman of the policy and resources committee, said the enclosure was the result of a communication breakdown between staff and the supplier. Mr Allan said the pupil's parents were full of praise for his teachers. However, they had been unhappy that for the past five years he had spent almost six hours a day inside temporary accommodation with a teacher. 'Old barriers' The enclosure was taken down over the past two weeks.
Asperger's syndrome. Our Duty to Minorities | Martin Paul Eve. This is a quick, personal post to express my disgust at the government’s recent proposals to “reform” the Disabled Living Allowance and scrap the Independent Living Fund. While I have been extremely unhappy about the cuts, particularly to higher education, this latest batch hits a group of people who really need this support. And what does it save? The ILF costs a relatively small £359m. To put this in perspective: the current UK defecit is £106510m. Now, I’m also not an advocate of debt, but I believe that a collective debt of a nation is better than individuals being personally harmed; that’s when we’re “all in it together”. Staffordshire autism campaigner Kevin Healey is heading to London to deliver thousands of signatures supporting change in the way autism is handled. Two sides to every story. The purpose of education. Our son has made us question every aspect of our lives and our place in society. Like most families we encounter informal learning opportunities every day. However we decided not to participate in the formal education offered by the state. We learn at home, in our community, in the wider world. My son has Aspergers syndrome – with complex learning needs – our curriculum is broad, diverse and multidisciplinary. It has to be flexible and responsive. He learns during face to face activities and connects and collaborates through online games. His learning opportunities reflect the world he lives in, and the one he will need to be able to survive in as an adult. The state education system failed dramatically to respond to our son’s needs because it offers a standardised one-dimensional approach that assumes a commonality of potential.
Our, sometimes painful, experience has revolutionised our thinking as parents and as people who have always worked in education.
