Health care construction spending: The most important indicator nobody is talking about. Dell LBO objectors in tight corner. Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images Objectors to the founder’s $24.4 billion leveraged buyout of Dell are in a tight corner. The likes of Southeastern Asset Management are right that Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners have made a lowball offer. Yet it’s at a respectable 25 percent premium, and the company’s shares haven’t topped the $13.65 per share deal price in months or Southeastern’s $23.72 per share valuation in years. Dell’s net cash, its finance business at book value and the cost of recent acquisitions, which Dell says are doing well, add up to almost $13 a share, as Southeastern points out. That’s practically the whole of the LBO price, yet it ignores the value of Dell’s server and PC business and most of its IT consulting. Those businesses may be in decline, but they are not worthless. Or look at it this way. Southeastern’s other ideas require patience.

Darwin Day: Feb. 12, 2013 set to celebrate the creator of the idea of evolution. Image credit: The Royal Mint If Charles Darwin were alive today, he’d be celebrating his 204th birthday. However, millions of years of evolution have prevented humans from living that long. Still, that doesn’t stop those of us who are alive today from celebrating the man and his work.

Evolution is the basis for all modern biology. It is the central tenet, the organizing theme, the trunk from which all branches grow. It has changed considerably since the early days when Darwin (and his contemporary Alfred Russel Wallace) first proposed the idea that species change over time*. For biology, Darwin is the founder in much the same way Newton or Galileo was for physics. Because of this, there has been an informal movement over the years to declare February 12 as Darwin Day. The American Humanist Association is asking people to write their Representatives in support this resolution. [*Note: In an attempt to be brief, I wrote that Darwin proposed the idea that species change over time. Donnie Wahlberg Is Fascinated By Evolution. So, Ive Been Trying Out This Lesbian Dating App... “No. No. Hmm, maybe. No. Absolutely not. My flatmate is looking over my shoulder while I flick through images of chicks on Brenda.

Brenda, for those who don’t know, is the lesbian-dating app with quite possibly the unsexiest name ever. It’s made up of a big grid, like Grindr, and is organised geographically, like Grindr. It's a wonderful tool, given that lesbians are so hard to find. So, when I first downloaded Brenda I thought it was a cracking idea. However, Brenda is a bit like the discard pile in a game of rummy. Mostly there are three types of Brenda girls: the ones who start a conversation with “hey sexy pussy girl” (I beg your pardon!?)

Sometimes, just sometimes, you meet up with someone, but they’re probably not at all what they looked like on thumbnail. Sure, it should be a great place to meet like-minded people but no one seems that like-minded. One sweet girl offered me £300 to shag her boyfriend in front of her. Then there are the sexually meek. What You Don't Know About Fast & Furious. A few days ago I wrote a short post about the Fast & Furious affair. I said I'd followed it only from afar, the whole thing seemed sort of ridiculous, and I never planned to write about it again. But at the time, I assumed that I at least knew the basics: F&F was a program run by the Phoenix branch of the ATF in which they deliberately allowed "straw" purchasers to buy guns, hoping to later track those guns to the drug lords and other higher-ups who used them to arm their gangs.

Then, via rank incompetence, ATF lost track of the guns, one of which was eventually used to kill ATF agent Brian Terry. But Fortune's Katherine Eban has a long piece about F&F in this week's issue, and if she's even close to right, then everything I thought I knew was wrong. F&F wasn't a gun walking operation. Nobody deliberately allowed guns to be shipped to Mexican drug lords. Eban's story is too long and detailed to be excerpted, but when I started reading I couldn't stop. The truth about the Fast and Furious scandal. By Katherine Eban Dave Voth, Fast and Furious supervisor for the ATF FORTUNE -- In the annals of impossible assignments, Dave Voth's ranked high. In 2009 the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives promoted Voth to lead Phoenix Group VII, one of seven new ATF groups along the Southwest border tasked with stopping guns from being trafficked into Mexico's vicious drug war.

Some call it the "parade of ants"; others the "river of iron. " The Mexican government has estimated that 2,000 weapons are smuggled daily from the U.S. into Mexico. Voth, 39, was a good choice for a Sisyphean task. Voth's mandate was to stop gun traffickers in Arizona, the state ranked by the gun-control advocacy group Legal Community Against Violence as having the nation's "weakest gun violence prevention laws. " Customers can legally buy as many weapons as they want in Arizona as long as they're 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.

Trafficking in Persons Report 2009 Trafficking Victims Protection Act: Minimum Standards for the Elimination of Trafficking in Persons. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, Div. A of Pub. L. No. 106-386, § 108, as amended. (A) Minimum standards For purposes of this chapter, the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking applicable to the government of a country of origin, transit, or destination for victims of severe forms of trafficking are the following: (1) The government of the country should prohibit severe forms of trafficking in persons and punish acts of such trafficking. (2) For the knowing commission of any act of sex trafficking involving force, fraud, coercion, or in which the victim of sex trafficking is a child incapable of giving meaningful consent, or of trafficking which includes rape or kidnapping or which causes a death, the government of the country should prescribe punishment commensurate with that for grave crimes, such as forcible sexual assault. (4) The government of the country should make serious and sustained efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons.

Disproportionate Risk Pictures of Numbers. Here’s a graphic from the folks at Catalogtree, published March 4, 2007, in the New York Times Magazine, in an article on the influence Shia Islam is likely to have on Middle East elections. So where are all the Shiites then? If you said Iran and Bahrain, you are so, so wrong. Pakistan actually has 60 times as many Shiites as Bahrain, a tiny country with far fewer Shiites than Iraq. What the graphic is showing is percentages, not numbers; percentages of a total population we’re not told. The designers probably decided that percentages were most important when you’re discussing elections, but the convention in these types of graphics is that each little person stands for an actual amount (say, a million people), rather than 1%.

If we go the the Foreign Affairs article cited, we find the following data. Note that Catalogtree chose just a few of these countries to graph; Bahrain rather than, say, Afghanistan or Syria. For every 100 men on university campuses in Canada there are 136 women, and across North America women are heading off to college at much higher rates than men.

From an economic (and perhaps evolutionary biology) perspective, that makes it a buyer’s market. According to new research recently published in Sociological Quarterly, giving market power to men is leading to an increase in promiscuity on campuses and creating negative attitudes among women toward dating and relationships.* Using a nationally representative sample of US college students, the paper finds that on college campuses with fewer women relative to men, women are more likely to be virgins.

Decrease the relative number of men though, and women both become more sexually active and less likely to be in a relationship. This evidence at least suggests that when women outnumber men, men have greater influence on when a couple has their first sexual experience together. Regnerus, Mark and Jeremy Uecker (2010). Feminist Perspectives on Reproduction and the Family. First published Sat Nov 6, 2004; substantive revision Mon Oct 21, 2013 Historically, few of the philosophers who defended justice in the public political realm argued for just family structures.

Instead, most viewed the family as a separate realm that needed to be protected from state intrusion. The private sphere and the public sphere were dichotomized into separate realms with the latter beyond the reach of public action. Where these philosophers did not legitimate private power in the family, they simply ignored it. John Stuart Mill was a notable exception, arguing in The Subjection of Women, that the inequality of women in the family was incompatible with their equality in the wider social world.

Consider, he asks, the consequences of “the self-worship, the unjust self preference” nourished in boys growing up in male dominated households in which “by the mere fact of being born male he is by right the superior of all and every one of an entire half of the human race” (1869, 86–87). 9 Surprising Uses for Oxy Boost (Its Not Just for Laundry!) - Healthy Home - Honestly... This month, during Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we’ve discussed frequently asked questions about trafficking and learned from women who have made battling modern-day slavery their professional mission.

But there’s another component to the fight against human trafficking you should know about: what governments are doing to prevent and address the issue in their own countries and around the world. In general, government intervention varies—while some countries are creating policies that work for their cultures, others are lagging behind with no counter-trafficking laws at all. There are also some international standards: In 2003, the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons established a universal trafficking definition and set a goal for countries to prevent and combat trafficking and assist victims. Similarly, the U.S. These efforts are challenging, however, as there is no one way to address the variations in trafficking across the world. United States. Techmeme. If we’re adding up their hits and misses, there are a lot more failed consoles/handhelds in their catalog. Their best sellers (in terms of market share) have been the NES, Super NES, DS, and Wii. The misses (again, we’re talking market share) have been the N64, Virtual Boy, Gameboy, Gamboy Advance, 3DS, Gamecube, and now the Wii U. You might argue against the Gameboy, but it was not a big seller, despite being the only handheld on the market (I’m comparing it to console sales). The Wii was a big seller. The Wii U has a tablet controller. The 3DS and Vita handhelds are getting torched by mobile devices. The one positive of the Wii U is that Nintendo is finally getting current generation ports.
