Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images Objectors to the founder’s $24.4 billion leveraged buyout of Dell are in a tight corner. The likes of Southeastern Asset Management are right that Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners have made a lowball offer. Yet it’s at a respectable 25 percent premium, and the company’s shares haven’t topped the $13.65 per share deal price in months or Southeastern’s $23.72 per share valuation in years. Dell’s net cash, its finance business at book value and the cost of recent acquisitions, which Dell says are doing well, add up to almost $13 a share, as Southeastern points out. That’s practically the whole of the LBO price, yet it ignores the value of Dell’s server and PC business and most of its IT consulting. Those businesses may be in decline, but they are not worthless. Or look at it this way. Southeastern’s other ideas require patience.

However, millions of years of evolution have prevented humans from living that long. Still, that doesn’t stop those of us who are alive today from celebrating the man and his work.
Evolution is the basis for all modern biology. It is the central tenet, the organizing theme, the trunk from which all branches grow. It has changed considerably since the early days when Darwin (and his contemporary Alfred Russel Wallace) first proposed the idea that species change over time*. For biology, Darwin is the founder in much the same way Newton or Galileo was for physics. Because of this, there has been an informal movement over the years to declare February 12 as Darwin Day. The American Humanist Association is asking people to write their Representatives in support this resolution. But Fortune's Katherine Eban has a long piece about F&F in this week's issue, and if she's even close to right, then everything I thought I knew was wrong. F&F wasn't a gun walking operation. Nobody deliberately allowed guns to be shipped to Mexican drug lords. Eban's story is too long and detailed to be excerpted, but when I started reading I couldn't stop. What the graphic is showing is percentages, not numbers; percentages of a total population we’re not told. The designers probably decided that percentages were most important when you’re discussing elections, but the convention in these types of graphics is that each little person stands for an actual amount (say, a million people), rather than 1%.

From an economic (and perhaps evolutionary biology) perspective, that makes it a buyer’s market. According to new research recently published in Sociological Quarterly, giving market power to men is leading to an increase in promiscuity on campuses and creating negative attitudes among women toward dating and relationships.* Using a nationally representative sample of US college students, the paper finds that on college campuses with fewer women relative to men, women are more likely to be virgins.
Decrease the relative number of men though, and women both become more sexually active and less likely to be in a relationship.
