A Spectacular Canvas. The 2013 Vivid Sydney Festival Kicks Off | Vivid Sydney, an annual 18-day festival of light, music, and ideas, will once again transform Sydney's skies, waters, and landmarks into a spectacular canvas of light. Kicking off the festival is Australia’s own creative innovators The Spinifex Group who have taken over the Sydney Opera House sails with a newly commissioned artwork, “PLAY”, transporting audiences through a playfully projected journey that will celebrate Vivid Sydney’s light, music and ideas in an immersive new way.

In the ultimate art meets architecture encounter, The Spinifex Group is outfitting the Opera House sails with a new visual adventure featuring dramatic animations and iconic, thought-provoking imagery. Also part of this years festival will be a glowing makeover of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCAA) is a major harbourside venue in Vivid Sydney. Sydney Opera House. In It’s A Wonderful Life the film’s protagonist George Bailey, facing a crisis of faith, is visited by his guardian angel, and shown an alternate reality where he doesn’t exist. The experience gives meaning to George’s life, showing him his own importance to others. With the increasing scale of design competitions these days, architectural “could-have-beens” are piling up in record numbers, and just as George Bailey's sense of self was restored by seeing his alternate reality, hypothesizing about alternative outcomes in architecture is a chance to reflect on our current architectural moment. Today marks the one-year-anniversary of the opening of Phase 3 of the High Line. While New Yorkers and urbanists the world over have lauded the success of this industrial-utility-turned-urban-oasis, the park and the slew of other urban improvements it has inspired almost happened very differently.

Sydney Architecture Walks. May 17-June 23 | Head On Photo Festival. Home - City of Sydney. Sydney Opera House. Blue Mountains Architecture Master Class. Architecture Foundation Australia will be presenting the Blue Mountains Architecture Master Class, a residential studio based one week program being held with Rick Joy in the Blue Mountains Australia with Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury.

The program will be a studio based design ‘charette’, undertaken in small groups, for a project (yet to be determined), on a site within walking distance of the venue. Suggested themes include the exploration of architectural strategies that can moderate between the permeation of the external envelope in Australian coastal architecture and how this might confront more harsh climates and locations. The design program will be supported by talks from the ‘masters’ and on-going tutorial support during the week.

All the ‘masters’ will stay with the participants at the venue – Jemby Ringa Lodge at Blackheath, 600 meters from spectacular Evans Lookout. For more information, including registration, please visit here.
