Nederlands Architectuurinstituut. The Sixth Jaap Bakema Fellowship. The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and the A10 new European architecture magazine are launching the Bakema Fellowship 2011/2012. This fellowship is a grant of €10,000 for research, through design, at the cutting-edge of architecture, technology and society. The deadline for applications is 16 October 2011. Application criteria and other fellowship information after the break. Applications should somehow coincide with the NAI’s ‘Architecture of Consequence’ innovation agenda. The grant is intended for pioneering research which can open up novel perspectives on design, use and perception of the built environment.

The entries will be assessed on the basis of the study’s anticipated significance for the development and understanding of contemporary architecture and the built environment. An application must consist of a text of 1,400 words at most, accompanied by illustrative materials. Jacob Berend Bakema (1914-1981) was one of the most important post-war Dutch architects. Ole Bouman. Rotterdam Historic Housing Project / Sputnik. Architects: Sputnik Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands Client: Woonbron Delfshaven, Rotterdam Photographs: Rubén Dario Kleimeer In the historic Delfshaven district of Rotterdam (The Netherlands), an exciting new housing project is recently completed named Achterhaven.

The project, designed by Sputnik Architecture Urbanism Research from Rotterdam, is the result of a competition held in 2004 by Woonbron Housing Corporation. Idea Delfshaven was originally the Port City of Delft, and Woonbron requested a design that would fit into the historic context of the district. Rather than focusing on Delft’s building facades, the urban structure of Delft stood as the model for the plan. “Nolli’s map” reworked for Delfshaven There is an interesting layering of public space in the city of Delft that is comparable to other historic town centres. Alleys The resulting urban space is surprising and transparent. Squares The alleys lead to the squares, which are above street level and semi-public in use.

The Intense City / Architectenbureau Marlies Rohmer. Architects: Architectenbureau Marlies Rohmer Location: Groningen, The Netherlands Design team: Marlies Rohmer and Floris Hund; with Ronald Hageman, Gieneke Pieterse, Rikjan Scholten, Klaas Nienhuis and Client: Proper-Stok Woningen B.V. Project area: 9,312 sqm Project year: 2004 – 2010 Photographs: Rob de Jong, Marcel van der Burg, René de Wit The former water supply company site on Bloemsingel is part of the City of Groningen’s housing construction campaign The Intense City. This building festival covers multiple sites in the city centre, whose infill will enrich the diversity of functions. One theme of the festival is “parochial space”, a semi-public space inside an urban block. Connection from square to courtyard The building is separated from the historical electricity substation by a small square of open space. Starter homes Groningen is the “youngest” city in the Netherlands with 50,000 under 25s out of a total population of 187,000.

Didden Village / MVRDV. Architects: MVRDV Project location: Rotterdam, Netherlands Date: 2002-2006 Client: Didden Family Program: 45 sqm extension private residence and 120 sqm terrace Most topping up on rooftops is done for two reasons: a need for additional space and the desire to live or work high above the city rooftops, closer to heaven than to other people.

Dutch architecture firm designed an extension for the Didden family on top of an existing monumental house and atelier. The attic storey of the house below is extended by a sky-blue parapet. Behind it two gables of the same colour can be seen. It creates a crown on top of the monument. The extension is an example of the growing trend to exploit the urban roofscape for new living and working spaces. The bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimising the privacy of every member of the family (one for parents and two adjoining children’s rooms). The ‘village’ is enclosed by a parapet with windows that offer views of the street. Ivan Baan.
