Completed between 1937 – 1959, Taliesin West was the winter home to Wright and his wife’s summer home, Taliesin, in Spring Green, Wisconsin in addition to being Wright’s workshop and school for his apprentices. More on Taliesin West after the break. First conceptualized in 1927 to escape the harsh winters of the Midwest, Arizona’s arid desert climate proved to a place that could inspire Wright and his apprentices.

Wright found that the atmosphere of Scottsdale’s Sonoran desert was a perfect place for a residence, a place of business, and most importantly a place to learn stating: “Arizona needs its own architecture… Arizona’s long, low, sweeping lines, uptilting planes. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Turkel House Gets a Second Life. When Dale Morgan and Norman Silk spotted a “For Sale” sign in front of a contemporary home in the Palmer Woods neighborhood of Detroit it was just what they were looking for, so they snatched it up.

Little did they know that they had just stumbled into buying a true Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, known as the Turkel House. To answer the question you are all asking yourselves, how could they not have known, it turns out that 25 years of disrepair, long periods of vacancy and changing owners hands combined with years of deferred maintenance and overgrown vegetation can hide a FLW design quite well. More following the break. Commissioned in 1955 by Dorothy Turkel the 4,300 sqf home is the only two-story Usonian home that Wright designed (even more of a steal for Morgan and Silk!) “The house was very forward thinking. Once they realized what they just bought, Morgan and Silk decided to leave their aesthetic behind and restore the house to the greatness that it once was inside and out. AD Classics: R.W. Lindholm Service Station / Frank Lloyd Wright. This proposition stood as both a planning statement and a socio-political scheme, in which each U.S. family would receive an acre of land from the federal lands reserves. Wright unveiled a detailed twelve by twelve foot scaled model that represented a four square mile section of the hypothetical community. The R.W. Lindholm Service Station is the only part of his Broadacre designs that was realized. More on Frank Lloyd Wright‘s R.W. “Watch the little gas station…. This idea of the de-centralized American urban landscape was not implemented directly, although it did foreshadow the decentralization that occurred after World War II. AD Classics: Unity Temple / Frank Lloyd Wright. Before the Robie House, Fallingwater, and the Guggenheim, Frank Lloyd Wright’s career was just beginning to take off in Oak Park, Illinois. One of the most significant projects from his early career is Unity Temple near his home and studio in Oak Park. Completed in 1908, Unity Temple was a replacement church for Unitarian Universalist Church that had burned down in 1905. The church is poised as an important work for the Modernist movement in the early 20th Century, but it was also the foundation from which the Prairie School would originate into Wright’s architectural language. More on Unity Temple after the break. Unity Temple was not just an ordinary commission for Wright since he was a parishioner of the Unitarian Church in Oak Park.
