Park City . UT In approaching the design for the new Kimball Art Center, we found great inspiration in the urban development of Park City, the Kimball site, and the city’s mining heritage. We feel the form of the new Kimball Art Center emerges where these rich stories overlap. We were particularly moved when a long-time resident of Park City spoke nostalgically about the former Coalition Building, which once stood just south of the Kimball site. Historically, timber was the primary construction material of the first miner settlers in Park City.
BIG. Big Located on the edge of Gärdet, a treasured national park, Kullen makes conscious decisions to provide a sensitive, respectful form while allowing the same choices to simultaneously manifest as exceptional residences with spectacular views.
In direct response to the context, the northwest and southeast corners take the heights of their immediate neighbors; while the northeast corner, farthest from the park and nominally with the worst view, is pulled upwards to grant it the most spectacular views of park and port. The southwest point of the building extends farthest into Gärdet; and to create a humane edge between building and nature, is pushed down to the lowest profile, transforming it into a public platform with a 270 degree view of parkscape and simultaneously freeing the majority of the residential units to views of the park.

BIG natural history museum . copenhagen. How do you approach an existing built heritage without ending up with a classic dichotomy between the old versus the new?
Rather than trying to add new buildings to existing structures, we propose to add a man-made landscape of stones to the existing buildings in the Botanical Garden. The new Natural History Museum’s architecture will not compete with the existing built heritage. We propose a Natural History Museum as a man-made mineral landscape that naturally adapts to the historic buildings and their stone pavings and the organic forms of the Botanical Garden - a Geological Garden of building and landscape. The new museum extension in the Botanical Garden requires a synthesis crisscrossing between urban form, architecture and landscape design, science, storytelling, communication and research. Vancouver Beach and Howe will be part of a new phase in Vancouver’s very short but extremely successful history of urban policy. It will announce the entry point into downtown Vancouver from Granville Bridge, forming a gateway to the city. The tower and base are a new interpretation of the local typology deemed ‘Vancouverism’ of a new urbanist podium coupled with a slender tower, which seeks to preserve view cones through the city while activating the pedestrian street.
