21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1.1 update available for Maemo 5 CSSU.

It has been burning a hole in my brain ever since I turned it off for my new Samsung Galaxy S II. But it’s on tonight and after a brief charge I decided to visit the Community SSU/Changelog page to see if anything has been happening and discovered there have been a number of firmware updates since my last update (PR 1.3.3.7-9 update available for Maemo 5 CSSU) with the latest version being 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo1.1 dated 30.11.2011. The changelog says the following (Source – Community SSU/Changelog): How to install: [NOTE: Before following my installation route, consider the Community SSU route - Point 3 is important--> Open this page in N900 web browser.

I didn’t try and install everything at once, insteaded tapped on Continue and then only ran the Maemo update. Related Topics: Like this: Like Loading... Symfonie is a brilliant music player for the N900. Last night I downloaded Symfonie to my Nokia N900 and what a wonderful media player it is?

Symfonie is a brilliant music player for the N900.

What sets it aside from the default media player is it’s extra features and it has a wealth of those. Created by Cuong Tham, the author behind the Code Central dot com, this is one feature packed media player. Support for the following file types (mp3, wma, m4a, mp4, ogg, wav, flac, acc, m4p, ape, 3pg, ra, gsm, dct, vox, mmf, au, mpc, aiff, raw, dss). Now that is one mega list of supported music extensions and even though I am unlikely to play a *.3pg or *.aiff, I do have a lot of *.flac, *.wav, *.mp3, *.ogg, *.vox and how useful to be able to play them all in one player.

Flac in particular sound awesome. It’s got an Options screen where one can set the font size (nice touch), so one is not forced to use the stylus. FBReader is one great eBook reader. On my Nokia N900 I have many eBook readers (5 in fact including Adobe PDF reader) that do a fairly good job of displaying a book in the right format and presenting it in a readable fashion.

FBReader is one great eBook reader.

But one application stands out above them all and it’s called FBReader. What makes it amazing is it’s functionality. It has a wealth of features that can be turned on or off, customized to your liking and if one wants to get all geeky and delve into configuration screens, well then this is the app for you. April 19th, 2011 Mike Posted in Desktop, Firmware, Maemo Community | No Comments » | 10,594 views Taking a screenshot normally means pressing Ctrl+Shift+P together, which is not too bad when one has the phone in the default horizontal mode with the keyboard out.

February 14th, 2011 Mike Posted in Applications | 3 Comments » | 1,667 views I got three twitter applications on my Nokia N900, but is by far the best one available for the N900. Tommi Laukkanen’s latest version 2.7.1 and the previous version 2.6.1 are written in QML, Qt Quick and Javascript and offer a lot smoother and finger friendly experience than his previous versions .

The screen is well laid out and fonts are clear and large. Names, icons and the time of the tweet are clear. The icons at the bottom of the screen are large, trendy and cool. Click on a tweet and one sees all the relevant information, the groups the tweeter referenced and all the important buttons I need to see in order to reply or retweet or add to my favourites. The More button on the main screen takes one to extra options and again they are clearly laid out and easy to get to. Some key features of from Tommi Laukkanen’s website Substance of Code : Auto-login Auto-refresh (5 minutes) New mentions icon. Check out my Nokia N900 couch desktops. February 14th, 2011 Mike Posted in Applications , Babes , Desktop | 6 Comments » | 2,360 views One of the most awesome things about my Nokia N900 is the fact that I can have multiple desktops (up to 7 in this example) and have an unique background for each desktop.

There are not many smartphones on the market today that can offer this feature. BandFan told me Lady Gaga is playing at the O2. February 17th, 2011 Mike Posted in Applications , Entertainment | No Comments » | 1,015 views This evening I was browsing the OVI Beta store on my Nokia N900 and stumbled upon a music application that has the potential of being useful. If you are into live music then BandFan is your type of application.

It uses the GPS in the N900 along with a ‘live location network’ to find your favorite concerts in your area. After I loaded BandFan and made a connection to a satellite, I could see instantly that Lady Gaga will be doing her thing at the O2 Arena, Peninsula Square, Greenwich, which lucky for me is only 12.6 miles away in a westward direction. Tapping on the ‘Lady Gaga’ image opened another screen which offered a description, which sadly displayed a messsage “ Sorry, no further information is available “. There is also a “ Show on Map ” button, which shows the location of the venue, but it didn’t quite get the correct coordinates of the O2 Arena. Uninstall time!

Untitled. Stream music video photos to ? with MiniDLNA. July 19th, 2011 Mike Posted in Applications , Maemo Community , Video | 4 Comments » | 3,115 views There is a great little app called MiniDLNA by Karl Wintermann that allows me to turn my Nokia N900 into a multimedia hub that can stream music, video and photos to any DLNA supported devices, and these days there are plenty of them around (Video Cameraa, PC, XBOX, PS3, Most new digital LED/LCD TV’s, multimedia boxes, NAS servers etc). NITDroid – Android Apps everyone should have.

Coming from Maemo 5 the Application Manager can be quite disasterous if the wrong app in installed, well for the noob in us all , so it’s quite refreshing to scroll through the Android Market, but one soon realizes that the market is a complete mess of hundreds if not thousands of free and pay apps. Unless one knows the name of the app, finding apps can be quite tedious and pointless, so a big thanks goes to a wonderful application called Best Apps Market. Tapping on Top Apps, gives one a list showing various categories such as: Apps Everyone should have, Fun at a Party Apps, Organize your life apps, Apps movie lovers applaud etc. There are over a dozen categories. For this post I went into Apps Everyone Should Have and it’s brilliant. Tapping into an app shows off a couple of screenshots of what the appliction looks like in it’s various screens. Quite frankly this application is incredible. Like this: MeeGo 1.2 will be released on the 19th of May. May 16th, 2011 Mike Posted in Meego | 2 Comments » | 1,749 views MeeGo 1.2 will be released on the 19th of May 2011 and a few days later it will be available for my Nokia N900.

Equally impressive, the man is a genius to get this icon set out there so quickly. One can download the latest Harmattan icon pack from the Application Manager or you can download it from here: harmattan-icons-pack_1-1.1.1.-2_all.deb and run it from your file manager. PowerFilm USB+AA Solar Charger + Nokia N900. There is no shame in admitting that my Nokia N900 is the greatest Smartphone on this planet and yet it is flawed in one crucial department… the battery.

PowerFilm USB+AA Solar Charger + Nokia N900.

To be honest, on a day to day basis it is the least of my worries as I have battery chargers everywhere and it’s a way of life now to plug the N900 in when not in use, whether it is at night next to my bed, or on my desk or at the office. I always carry the Nokia DC-11 in case of an emergency, so running out of juice is rarely a problem. But what if I am not at the office or at home or my DC-11 is flat? This coming September/October I will be walking from St Jean Pied-de-Port in France over the Pyrenees mountains (the natural border between France and Spain) all the way to Burgos in Northern Spain.
