Sci-fi technology to detect disease -  Technology. A team of scientists has deployed space age technology similar to that used in science fiction series Star Trek to detect illness A team of scientists has deployed space age technology similar to that used in science fiction series Star Trek to detect illness at a new "sick bay". A new hi-tech disease detection facility, developed by the University of Leicester, uses technology that could eventually help develop devices akin to the 'tricorders' from Star Trek - used by medics on the TV show to diagnose illness simply by waving it near a patient - one of the scientists working on the project said.

It will be used in Leicester Royal Infirmary's A&E department and is designed to detect the "sight, smell and feel" of disease without the use of invasive probes, blood tests, or other time-consuming and uncomfortable procedures. The new £1 million-plus facility uses three different types of technology in combination, and could speed up diagnosis.

Gene that makes you a couch potato: Scientists discover why some have all the energy... and others don't. By Tamara Cohen Updated: 00:52 GMT, 6 September 2011 It could be the perfect excuse for those who find exercise something of a chore: ‘I’m not lazy, it’s my genes.’ Scientists have discovered why some of us have the energy to work out for hours while others can barely summon the get-up-and-go to reach for the TV remote. They believe they have pinpointed the genes that produce an enzyme in our muscles during exercise called AMP kinase, which controls the way we turn food into energy.

It's all in the genes: Scientists have found an enzyme in our muscles which controls how we turn food into energy - explaining why some people have endless energy, and others do not Those who generate large quantities of AMPK have more energy, whereas those with lesser amounts are likely to tire almost immediately. Dr Gregory Steinberg, who led the research, said the discovery could lead to treatments for those who find it difficult to exercise, including the obese and those with asthma.

Meditation and yoga classes for primary school pupils 'improves grades' By Andrew Levy Updated: 07:12 GMT, 13 April 2011 At such a tender age, they probably don’t know their salamba kapotasana from their trikonasana. But that hasn’t stopped these primary school children benefiting from a spot of yoga. Weekly lessons in the ancient discipline have helped to improve concentration and even raise academic performance among pupils as young as four, say their teachers. Meditation: A teacher takes school pupils in Essex through some relaxation techniques, which are said to improve concentration levels Standing tall: Teachers say yoga has taught the youngsters body awareness Stress GRAPHIC The hour-long classes, which include guidance on how to control breathing using meditation techniques, are being trialled at ten infant and junior schools in Essex.

And while the use of a £20,000 Government grant to fund the lessons will doubtless raise a few eyebrows, especially at a time of economic hardship, teachers insist they are having a positive effect. Why some cancers develop in an instant - some cells can explode wreaking havoc in DNA. By Fiona Macrae Updated: 00:23 GMT, 7 January 2011 The mystery of 'instant cancers' - tumours that seem to appear out of nowhere - has been solved by British scientists. In some cases, a single apocalyptic ‘explosion’ in a cell can cause as much damage to the DNA as decades of hard living. A model of a DNA Molecule. Scientists have found one in 40 cancers could develop rapidly after an unexpected cell explosion causes DNA damage The finding, from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge, contradicts the long-held theory that cancer is the consequence of hundreds, or thousands, of mutations that build up over a person’s lifetime. It suggests that no matter how healthy some people try to be, fates is conspiring against them.

The discovery was made from the study of the genetic flaws in 750 tumours. In most cases, the damage seen to the chromosomes fitted with the conventional picture of cancer creeping up over many years. Researcher Dr Peter Campbell said: ‘The results astounded us.

Migraine gives English woman a Chinese accent. By Luke Salkeld Updated: 10:59 GMT, 20 April 2010 Sarah Colwill, 35, from Plymouth said her new accent is starting to annoy her As anyone who suffers migraines knows, the pain can leave you speechless. But Sarah Colwill has experienced a much more unusual vocal effect - she now speaks with a Chinese accent. The disturbing impact of a chronic migraine has left her voice unrecognisable to family and friends.

Doctors say she has Foreign Accent Syndrome, a condition which damages the part of the brain that controls speech and word formation. It is so rare, there are only 60 recorded cases in the world. Mrs Colwill, 35, is baffled by the effects and fears she may never regain her normal pronunciation and tone of voice. She said the change happened after she had such an extreme headache last month that she called for an ambulance. Paramedics said her voice sounded strange and when she arrived at hospital she realised she was speaking like a Chinese woman. One in 25 bosses 'is a psychopath' but hides it with charm and business-speak. By Duncan Macpherson Updated: 14:54 GMT, 2 September 2011 Business leaders are four times more likely to be psychopaths than the general population, a study has found. One out of every 25 company high-flyers is believed to have the mental disorder but disguises it through their high status, charm and manipulation in the workplace.

And only favourable environmental factors - such as having had a happy childhood - prevent their psychopathic tendencies turning them into serial killers. Psychopathic bosses like Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey), seen here menacing Nick Hendricks (Jason Bateman) in Horrible Bosses, are all too common Psychologists say today's ruthless corporate culture benefits people like Kevin Spacey's character in the recent movie Horrible Bosses, by rewarding their natural callousness and disregard of others' feelings. The findings emerge in a survey led by New York psychologist Paul Babiak to discover how many psychopaths had infiltrated major firms.
